Its a system file it may be hidden. Check your properties setting in explorer.

(XP is what you make it!)

I checked the pagefile.sys with regedit and it was there. But each time i turned on my computer, it still says "No paging file or page file is too low".

Pagefile.sys is XP's version of the swap file (virtual memory on your hard drive). XP moves program files back and forth between RAM and the pagefile. You might want to check your pagefile settings. Right click my computer\properties\advanced\performance\advance. Make sure the pagefile setting is set to programs.

My pagefile is set to programs. The problem I am having is that when i go to the advance section and try to set my pagefile to 300mb (then hit set), It does not register. It still states that my pagefile is 0. I have been going crazy for 4 days trying to figure this out. Any help is appreciated.

Got exactly the same problem on an IBM Thinkpad A20m (PIII 600 Laptop with 128MB RAM).
XP Worked well for 3 days and suddenly, after a reboot, I got the message "Limited Virtual Memory" and the file pagefile.sys (normaly on C:\) was missing, the system told me th&at it was expanding a temporary paging file (normaly C:\Winnt\System32\Temppf.sys) and this one is missing too.
I thought it was a securyty problem and I checked, but the user SYSTEM and the group Administrators have both FULL ACCESS to the whole drive...
Do you have an idea or I re-switch to Linux ?

Make sure you're clicking on the "SET" button after you select your file size. Just clicking on the "ok" buttom will not work.

Alright! I think I have found the answer. I saw strange post somewhere else about this (amongst a sea of posts of people not knowing what to do about this). I tried it and it worked!

Check you Add/Remove Programs for something called Intel Program Accelerator (or application accelerator). If you have it, remove it. Reboot, change your pagefile.sys settings as normal (system/advanced). Reboot, and tadda... no errors... check your root drive, and there it is, pagefile.sys!

Also, XP runs a lot better now. Not sure what the heck that Intel thing was doing... but it wasn't good.

I just fixed mine by uninstalling a DX plugin: Antares Mic Modeler.

This problem seems related to naughty programs not playing nice with the system. So look in your event log, see when the errors first started appearing, then figure out what program(s) you had installed at that time...

I had same problem... unlike the earlier post I had to add the Intel Program Accelerator. As per MS XP support, some Intel chipsets have problems with XP and you get the 'missing too small' message. Installed the Accelerator and I'm AOK now.

I didnt have an Intel or the program accelorator and none of the other solutions worked for me.

I found a program called TaskInfo which I used to track what drivers were being loaded etc. and found a couple of wierd ones. I removed them from the windows\system32\drivers directory and my page file reappeared!

Problem solved.

The drivers I removed were:

PQNTDrv.sys
rmdvd.sys
TPkd.sys

Don't blame me if you remove these files and your system goes whack. My unproven suspicion is that the problem was being caused by the last one on the list.

Hope it helps, Kenny.

Thanks to Kenny, Brad and Randy above who all aided in fixing the biggest pain the @#@#$& that MS ever annoyed me with.

1. I had the Intel accelerator and removed it, problem persisted.
2. Removed Antares Mic Modeler (DX plugin) but did not remove shared file "TPKD.sys". Problem persisted
3. Deleted "TPKD.sys", rebooted...success!!!

I am not sure if Brad's other two drivers also cause a problem but I am finally happy to have my pagefile back.

*Thank god MS makes software and not vaccines!!

I had the same problem, uninstalled Intel Application Accelerator, and voila - pagefile works. I reinstalled an updated version of Accelerator, and everything still works fine. BTW, you can actually delete, create, change and query the pagefile using pagefileconfig.vbs from a dos window.

Wow... and I thought I was the only one with this issue! its nice to know that I'm not alone. I have tried all these solutions on my new Dell Dimension 4400 and am still receiving the same error message. Windows is still trying to create a temporary pagefile but it never is successful. I am about to throw this thing out the window. Does anybody have any other possible solutions to this mess? Please tell me on here or email me at Trospa@hotmail.com i could really use the help
