How come?

You can disable use of the pagefile but you cannot turn off the use of virtual memory.

The pagefile is an area of the hard drive that cannot be used for anything other than virtual memory. Even if there is no pagefile XP will still use the hard disk, so what you see in the Task Manager would be use of the hard disk by the virtual memory manager. As for the first question, the page file is a reserved area of the hard disk, whereas virtual memory is a more general term that means using the hard disk for memory. In otherwords, the pagefile is used for virtual memory. If you turn off the pagefile XP will create a temporary area to use for virtual memory, which is what you see in the task manager.
