I've seen this message on startup a few times, i've also seen your bios is not fully acpi compliant, the file ntfs.sys is either missing or corrupt, and a few other doozies.i have a compaq with a celeron 1.1. 512M ram, 2 hard drives, and a network card. once i restart, it runs fine. any ideas?

At least the first can be caused by faulty memory. Download and run a memory diagnostic. You can find memtest86, which is a good one that is free, by searching on google.
