For the past few days, I have been getting frequent “page cannot be displayed” errors with IE. There seems to be no particular rhyme or reason; the problem pages range from popular ones like Google and Yahoo to less commonly viewed ones.

Additionally, I have been having problems with Firefox getting to the same pages.

When I have a problem, if I try to reload the page a few times, I can eventually get onto the site. Overall, the internet speed seems slower.

I can get into Yahoo Messenger with no problem (although the time it takes to connect seems a bit longer than before) – and I stay connected once I am logged on.

I connect to the internet via my cable company, Comcast. The connection seems to be o.k. – the correct lights are always on, and I never receive a pop-up window saying that my connection is lost.

I had that same problem. It seemed like a dns issue to me. I statically map my dns servers and I checked my router and noticed they had changed a while back. So I changed them on my PC but not my wifes...

My PC had the exact same problem with the new DNS servers. So I just put in the old IP addresses of the older DNS servers and everything is working great again.

I'm in indianapolis IN...These servers might work for you...Hope it's okay to post them here.

68.57.192.6
68.57.192.5

If you don't know how to put them in, just go into the network connection in the control panel and right click on the local area connection and access the properties screen.

Then under the TCP/IP properties you can manually enter the DNS addresses above. If it works then you may want to contact Comcast and ask them what's up...

Before you start on the DNS fix, try to repair your stacks.

I think the answer may a bit simpler than that. Try clearing your Temporary Internet Files. Use IE's Options page, rather than deleting the folder(s)

Hello... I have a very similar situation as you, Stephen. I am connected to the internet through Comcast here in Massachusetts. It seems as though I have the exact same slowdowns as you do, but my difficulties always seem to start between 8:00 and 9:00 in the evening. I assume that it could be related to bandwidth or something; way beyond my level of expertise here, LOL!
Last night I could not even reach the Comcast homepage to send them an e-mail; I always get the annoying " page cannot be displayed " thing. I am guessing that at those particular times there are huge numbers of people on-line.
Of course, this is no excuse as I am paying for a speedy internet service. In fact, I am contacting Comcast today to ask if they plan to remedy this damn annoying problem. I am getting closer to switching to Verizon DSL here.

Good luck with your situation, Stephen. I don't know if my problem is the same as yours, but I thought I'd mention it just in case.
If anyone has any comments regarding how I can best word this mess to Comcast, I'd sure appreciate it... (I want to word it correctly and not appear to sound too naive.)
Thanks!

Thanks everyone for the replies.

Jonesy, it seems like this might be a problem with Comcast (per Tommyo's reply), so I might start with them.

Sabertooth, I am not sure what stacks are. How would I got about repairing them?

VBScab, I do clean out the temp files and cookies whenever I have the problem.

Tommyo, my problems definitely seem to be more frequent later in the evening, around the same time as yours. I am in Massachusetts too. I will call Comcast from work today, and see what I can find out.

Tommyo, I called Comcast, and was told that they have had some DNS server issues this week, which may have caused the problems.

The customer service rep told me to call them if & when the problem happens again, and they can better determine where the problem lies.

Hi Stephen; well, I didn't know you were in Massachusetts too! I'm in central Mass; right next door to the Quabbin Reservoir state reservation.
I just called Comcast too, and they told me the same as they told you; something about a major "server error". I think I might have gotten a new person there as his knowledge seemed a little limited.
So I guess all we can do is see if we have this problem again today or this evening.

I'll continue to monitor this post, Stephen... perhaps we can assist each other here and see if we both have the problems at the exact same time. Good luck on your end; hopefully Comcast will straighten this thing out soon.
Take care, nice meeting and speaking with you.

Glad you do not need a winsock fix, but hey if you run into that infamous page cannot be displayed message in the future and it's not from your ISP's end, that repair tool should come in pretty handy.

Goodluck in Mass.

Hi Sabertooth! I'm actually somewhat relieved to know I am not alone here with this problem. My pc is only about two weeks old, and I was starting to talk to myself here, LOL!
I could see Comcast having an occasional server problem, but this is getting to be a nightly occurance now... very frustrating to say the least.
I hope I don't encounter it again tonight; I'll know about 8:00 pm here.
Anyone you know use Verizon DSL? I'm getting so annoyed with Comcast and I'm thinking about making a switch. Just wondering if it is a reliable and fast internet connection.
Take care Sabertooth; I'll keep ya' posted..

Hello Stephen. Here's an update at 8:35 pm tonight. So far, my internet is back to its' lightning fast speeds here. Of course, I don't want to get too psyched yet... we'll see later on tonight.

The tech person at Comcast told me that some hardware was replaced late last night, and they are pretty sure they have corrected that DNS error thing. He was quite nice to me; even credited my account for my troubles over the last few days.

If I experience any more troubles, or if I get any additional news, I'll keep in touch with you here on this post, o.k.?
I hope we both are back up to our normal speeds now. Take care; talk to you later on if there are any issues.

Stephen, if you are still following this post.... take a look at the link above.
It seems as though we are definitely not alone in experiencing these periodic slowdowns.
My friend just found this info and e-mailed it to me; good info here and it explains it.

Take care; good luck.

Tommoyo,

Thanks for the link, that is helpful.

For most of the week, I had no problems. Then on Saturday night (like the previous Saturday night), I started getting the "page cannot be displayed" errors, plus overall slowness.

I did report it to Comcast. The customer service rep said that she was "unaware of any problems in the area."
