This isn't a technical question, but what is the best way to pack a computer for a move? We will be traveling in a car for about two days. I don't have the original boxes or anything, so that isn't an option. Also, what's the best way to pack up CDs and DVDs? Thanks for your help.

Cd's and dvds
Either on the spindles or a binder.
I used to have like 500 cds/dvd I went to the hardware store and bought a dowel to hold them..As for the computer components..
Pack in a box as normal. The case I have always just wrapped in a towel to prevent scratches on the case.Junk Internet Explorer,
Get Firefox! You'll be happy you did.

Nothing special required. The only parts that might suffer from vibration is the hard disk and that is best left mounted where it will be protected from shock.
Just make sure the the computer is packed in suck a way that it cannot move about if you go round a corner a little two fast or have to do some heavy breaking.
The best place I always found is between the front and back seats with the front seat moved back as far as it will go, effectively jamming the computer against the back seat. That will give it all the protection it needs. Wrap the monitor in an old blanket to prevent the screen from getting scratched. Of course, if you have back seat passengers this wont be possible in which case you are going to have to put it in the boot (trunk). But the same applies. Just make sure it cant move about.
No special handling required for CDs DVDs. Just a little common sense.
When you reinstall the computer at your destination it may be necessary to remove the lid and check the plugs and cables and interfece cards havn't worked lose.

Hi Buzz, I thought it's always best to leave a blank cd in the CDROM drives before power down. If a dowel is better, can you give me ideas so I know what type to look for. Thanks

thanks for all the suggestions...just curious, Buzz, you said you USED to have 500 cds/dvds...what happened to them? also, what exactly is the dowel used for? I have all my cds and dvds in their original packaging and set in a rubbermaid type box thing, wrapped in some sheets i need to take anyway just for a little extra padding...hopefully that will be good enough.
Thanks again for the replies.

put a floppy diskette in the drive when transporting so the floppy heads don't bounce around and damage themselves.
A 3/8" dowel is a way of holding cds/dvds that don't contain cases. Rubber bands wrapped at each end will prevent them from sliding around.
