Comment:

Hey everybody,
On the weekend I got VERY bored and decided I would play around with my old P1 machine. I love throwing high demands on it and see how it handles them so I decided I would install XP Pro... and it worked... Sort of.
It is slow but not as slow as expected, I am actually quite happy with it for Internet and MP3's but I have one small problem.. The CD rom died about an hour into Installing XP so the setup had to skip a few final files which I thaught would destroy the whole installation. But the old beast soldiered on and 15mins later XP booted up with most of its components missing. It was missing all its networking features, volume control, pretty much all its file associations, all games etc, windows media player and pretty much all the trimmings even system tools..
I have installed some of the small things but havent managed to get its networking going, or any system tools. I just want to be able to get access to my main computer so I can play my MP3 files off its hard drive but when I go into Network places nothing is in there, when I click on 'view network places' It just dings and dosent do anything else. I have manually set IP addresses and stuff like that and I can use the internet now, but it's not seeing any other computer. Is there a way I can get around this?
I think there may be something I need to install because small things like msconfig and sfc /scannow wont start from 'run' in the Start menu.

Thanks for any help, This is the computer that XP is runing on:

Pentium 1 150Mhz (No MMX)
64Mb Ram
5400RPM 1.7Gb HDD (850Mb free)
Zip Drive
Creative Vibra 16
2Mb S3 Trio 32 PCI Video.
What a beast : )

Sempron 2600+ OC 2.2GHz
1024Mb DDR400 2x512
2x80Gb 7200Rpm 8Mb
nVIDIA FX5500 128Mb
Dang Micro$oft...

I would have given up after thirty minutes.

With only 64 Mbs and a 1.7 GB hard disk the installation has skipped a lot of things simply because there is just no where to put them.

I wouldn't dream of running XP on anything less than 128 Mbs and even then it would be slow and at least 5Gbs of disk space just for the operating system.

Without a bigger hard disk and more memory there is not a lot you can do. Hardly worth the expense on 150 MHz CPU.

The minimum hardware requirenment for WinXP Home:
300 megahertz (MHz) or higher processor clock speed recommended; 233-MHz minimum required.
The bestP1 Processor clock speed is 233MZ!

Your P1 does not meet the Minimum Speed Required!

I guess you are right Jennifer,
I suppose I should be happy with what it has done. I was just experimenting with the old thing nothing serious. Anyways, I just got a new machine to toy with.
A socket 4 P1 60Mhz, 500Mb HDD, 16Mb Ram, Vesa Bus video card and the biggest sound blaster I have ever seen : ) I wonder what this one can do? I bet it was a beast in its time.

Not a lot. A machine of that spec will just about run Windows 95. It is really a DOS/Windows 3.11 machine.
