I would agree with Ewen. You should download pfbackup from the MS site and install it on all client machines. This will give you a current backup for your .pst file and this sort of problem is no longer a problem. You did not mention what version of Outlook you were using. Google for the proper version of pfbackup for your version of Outlook.
