Hi friends.. unusual problem with oversaturation of colors.

When I click a website that has a video stream, they display as highly oversaturated colors. Almost like an old negative film from a camera; only the colors are much too bright.
I like to go to TheBostonChannel.com and watch the news. When I click "view the video", it will open the box and play fine, but display those overly bright colors. Thia also happens on other websites too. But, I'll sometimes browse a website and the clips will play fine.

My Dimension is all 100% stock; no add-ons in regards to hardware at all. I did however reinstall Windows XP a few weeks ago. Not because of any problems; just to clean house and get a fresh new start.

All my drivers were installed and are there are no yellow "?" marks in "device manager". I am certain that I installed all the correct drivers for this Dimension 4700 from Dell's website.

Anyone ever hear of anything like this?
Thanks for any replies / recommendations!

In WMP go into the settngs and find the setting for use overlays and uncheck it if it is enabled. I had that problem after an nVidia display driver update.

Thanks very much Michael... But I don't use WMP; I use Creative Media Source player for all my video / audio. It came installed with the Audigy Soundblaster software.
And the video that is oversaturated is video that plays in the (website) page I am viewing.. not sure if I am wording this right...
In other words, I'll watch news on TheBostonChannel.com; I can click the video I want to view, and it plays on their webpage.. I don't need to open my Creative Media player. The video comes from channel 5 in Boston.

Let me know please if I'm not wording this correctly.... I'm not sure how to put it into the proper wording.
I'm getting the ole' (pre-senior) moments again, my friend. Boy, time waits for nobody, lol..

The video may be displayed on a web page, but it is an application on your machine that is playing it. Depending on what type of video it is (mpg, wmp, etc) there will be a default player on your machine for that video format.

When the video is playing, right-click on it and you should get a context menu that comes up. The last option in that list should tell you what application is running the video. If it is WMP, then try the solution I gave you above. If it is another application, try updating that application or checking it's configuration options for a solution.

OK, I just went to TheBostonChannel.com and played one of the videos. Lo' and behold it is being played with WMP on my machine. So, just try the solution I gave you in response #1. I'm not saying it will work, but I think it might.

Thanks.. I understand it much better now. I right-clicked the video, and it does say WMP. But... I don't have WMP installed on my computer. I assume there's no way I can direct videos to play through MediaSource???

If that is not possible, I guess I'll have to install WMP. A few days ago, I "unchecked" WMP from the "add and remove Windows programs". I don't know if I actually deleted it, or just stopped it from starting up.

Thanks very much Michael; I'll continue to probe around with this...

If the video is playing and it shows WMP when you right-click the video and go the the "About" section, then you have WMP installed. You may have just removed the links to it.

I would highly recommend keeping WMP installed or at least another "well-know" video app. Creatives "Media Source" isn't exactly a main-stream application.

in any event go to "C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\wmplayer.exe"

That is the WMP executable. Start it up and you should get the standard WMP. Then go to the option settings. The overlay option may or may not be there depending on the version you are running. If it isn't there oor if it doesn't fix the problem, download the most up-to-date video drivers fromt he manufacturer - most likely ATI or nVidia.

Wow, you 'da man, my friend....you 'da man!
I downloaded WMP version 10; version 11 looked like it was in beta. I was a bit confused not knowing what to assign file types for WMP. Not sure if I did that correct; I'll have to insert a dvd movie to make sure my Power DVD opens and plays it. And i hope my Creative Media Source still can play my small collection of My Music files. If not, I think I might know how to do that in Windows Explorer's "file types".

Just in case... could you tell me what file type plays on that Boston news station? I didn't know if that was .avi; or Windows video files.... What I'd love to do is continue my music files with Creative MediaSource.... Play my dvd movies with Power DVD; but have WMP take care of internet videos.. Is that possible?

Update.... Looks like I'm all set here Michael. I ran a few dvd's and cd's through my Plextor drive, and the movies play through Power DVD; and audio cd's play through my Creative MediaSource player.... PERFECT !!!
And the video clips, such as the ones on that Boston news station, all play perfectly now. Let me tell you, I am one happy camper here now! That was starting to bug me, lol.....

By baloney luck, I somehow must have coordinated the proper file associations with the proper program of my choice. Not sure how I did it, as I don't know too much about file types. But luckily everything plays perfectly.

Thank you so much Michael!! Awesome forum here.. thanks Justin for this forum, and thanks so much to the folks who give of their time and expertise to help out guys like me who are not yet very experienced (but slowly gettin' there...)

Take care everybody..
