I have a problem when sending email, using Outlook Express. I am working on a laptop connected via a home network to a PC with an ADSL internet connection. I can use the LAN in every respect without problems: file-sharing, internet sharing etc.

I am in France and have a Wanadoo account set up here. I also have a Freeserve account in the UK, and sometimes will send messages from the Freeserve account email address whilst connected to the Wanadoo account here in France, if you follow! On the PC, this poses no problems at all. But when I try to do the same on the laptop it tells me:

The message could not be sent because one of the recipients was rejected by the server. The rejected e-mail address was ((bla bla bla)). Subject '', Account: 'pop.wanadoo.fr', Server: 'smtp.wanadoo.fr', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '550 <((my email address))>: Recipient address rejected: Relaying not allowed', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 550, Error Number: 0x800CCC79

Any advice extremely gratefully received!!!

Thanks a million

Jeremy

Tried changing the port number to 25000, but still no joy I'm afraid.

THe message I was getting, which I quoted earlier, about relaying not allowed, is still pinpointing the port as 25.

Thanks anyway - any other ideas?

" Relaying not allowed', Port: 25, Secure(SSL) "

Are you invoking/using the SSL option?

If so perhaps disable the SSL option (if the box is checked - uncheck it) in the dial-up/logon for the account sending the mail.

It may be that the isp you or mail server you are using to send/access email doesn't recognise/allow SSL.

I found this out by accident when setting up Express with BT and Hotmail; also Outlook with BT... Invoking the SSL option (when not allowed) returns errors galore - one typcially being tcp/ip disconnects, and refusal to send mail...

I'm not able to check out Express properly at this moment; our LAN doesn't use it... so I'm necesarily a little vague as to where the SSL option is actually set/chosen

I use Express to access Hotmail; Outlook for BT - without SSL.

No, I've checked that SSL is definitely not enabled.

Bit of a mystery this one... thanks for your idea trvlr.

Is it anything to do with my Wanadoo server not recognising me because I am using it over a network? This is really not something I know a huge amount about.

I just did a google search Jeremy & this appears to be a common cause .

It is due to your ISP provider blocking SMTP port 25. Please contact your ISP to get their SMTP server and change your Outgoing mailserver from your email client to your ISPs SMTP server.

Thanks Johnw - thanks for your research on the net - all very informative.....sadly still not the root of the problem!

I've already set up the smtp settings to my Wanadoo server as suggested, but I still get that message. It certainly doesn't like me at the moment!

All suggestions very welcome still :->

Going back on my own experience (posted above)- if SSL 'is' invoked does it still produce the error?

Being a stubborn beastie when it comes to things wot is broke... I did a little more research/trawling on the www via google.

Various hits out there - using your error message as the string; i.e.

Relaying not allowed', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 550, Error Number: 0x800CCC79 .

This one may be of interest?

Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 217526

Likwise this one (scroll thru them; your error message is included in the various itmes listed...):

http://www.ufaq.fsnet.co.uk/frames/mail_errors.html

As I say there are many more appropriate hits 'out there' that may shed some light on it all?
