Hi Paul, hello everyone,

Try using Internet Explorer's repair option.

In the Control Panel click on Add/Remove Programs.

Scroll down until you find Microsoft Internet Explorer.

Highlight it and click the Add/Remove button.

From the menu, select "Repair Internet Explorer".

Best Regards,
Mesich

Go into Add/Remove Programs in Control panel,Windows Components (on the left) and uncheck Outlook Express and reboot. Once back up go in and check it and it will reinstall OK.
It does this every now and then....

Hi again guys... this has been very confusing!

With much fuss I have been able to get outlook to at least open. Then it wouldn't send and recieve without showing an error message.

However... I then created a local email folder folder called 'too big' and went to the email store. Then I then deleted the dbx folder 'too big' and renamed the indbox dbx and called it 'too big'.

I then opened outlook express and was able to download emails to the new inbox file... It seems the 28mb email that crashed did something to the original inbox size... This is now sorted!!

HOWEVER... i am now not able to see emails within other local folders - tehy are still there as teh dbx files in email store are of a significant size... does anyone know how to get outlook express to view them again?

Hi Hi Paul, Rich, hello everyone,

All of the folders you create in Outlook Express are referenced in the folders.dbx file. Did you happend to do anything with the folders.dbx file?

Best Regards,
Mesich

Hi Paul, Rich, hello everyone,

Quite odd indeed. Sounds as though the reference in the folders.dbx file is referencing them as you can view them in Outlook Express.

I am going to try something here right now before having you try it.

Be right back.

Mesich

many thanks....
The DBX files are basically the folders in outlook express. They are a variety of size - depending on how many emails are within each folder. So I know the emails are still there it's just odd that express cant see the emails within the folders.

Hi Paul, Rich, hello everyone,

Hi Paul,

I completely understand, you have explained the situation very well.

I have a couple of ideas. Let's try this first with one of the files.

Close Outlook Express.

Make a copy of one of the .dbx files in question and place it elsewhere on the hard drive.

Go to the original file and change the extention to .old.

Open Outlook Express, the folder should still be listed there and still empty.

Close out OE.

Go to the folder containing the original file you renamed the extention.

You should see that OE created a new file with the same name and using a .dbx extention, yet smaller in size than your original.

Delete the new one and rename the old file back with the .dbx extention.

Start OE and see if the emails are in that folder now.

Best Regards,
Mesich

have tried this but nothing happens.
Interestigly though I have found a couple of folders with some emails in so it seems it is only happening with some folders and sub folders.

Yet the dbx files under the email store are still a big size which makes me think the emails are still there within them.

Also when i double click a dbx file it doe snot know which programme to open it with... could it have lost its file connection? or could it be plain corrupted ( i really hope not)!

Hi Paul, Rich, hello everyone,

I agree that the folders still contain the emails in which you stored in them. Don't worry about not being able to open the .dbx files as you won't be able to without third party software.

Let's try and create a new identity in Outlook Express and put the files into it.

In OE click on File and Identities.

Select Add New Identity.

Set this up and close out OE.

This will create a new stored location for that idenity along with the default .dbx files.

Go to the new idetities location and delete the default files.

Go to the old identities location and copy and paste all of the .dbx files into the new one. Be sure to include the folder.dbx file when doing this.

Open OE and switch to the new identitie if it is not opened as the default.

Best Regards,
Mesich

Hi Paul, Rich, hello everyone,

Paul,

Give Outlook Express Archiever a shot. I just was able to recover 13 messages I didn't know were corrupted.

It has a 30 day free trial.

Best Regards,
Mesich
