Comment:

My husband downloaded some microsoft critical updates last night and now Outlook Express won't load. It opens and seems to be trying to load fully, but doesn't. There is no error message, the program simply seems unable to load fully. Can someone please advise me on how to fix this problem. Thank you in advance.

Did he go out to Microsoft's website to get the updates? Or did he run updates that were emailed to him? If it was an emailed update, then most likely you have a malicious virus that has affected OE and maybe more programs. If you have anti-virus software, I would suggest running a full system scan. If you don't have anti-virus software, get some.

You might want to go and download it again and then try it again. To get the latest version of Outlook Express, you need to download and install the latest version of Microsoft Internet Explorer. Why? Because Outlook Express is a component program of Internet Explorer.

Here is the link.

I don't know if this version of IE has all the patches on it but run Windows Update again and that should tell you.

He downloaded the updates from the Microsoft Update page.

The versions of IE and OE I use are 6.02800 and came with my Windows XP Home software.

If you ran your virus scanner and you found nothing then I would go and download it again. Maybe a file for OE didn't come across as it should have.

try running a repair on IE and OE. Use the System File Checker utility in Win XP. Click 'Start', then 'run', then type 'sfc /scannow' (no quotes), click 'ok'. You'll probably need to have your Win XP CD handy.

Or repair install OE...

NOTE: You must be logged in as Administrator

Click start, run, and then type the following
%systemroot%\inf
note: no spaces
click ok to open the INF folder

Locate the MSOE50.inf - Right-Click the file and then click install. This will reinstall OE. It will ask for your XP disc so have it handy.

Sabertooth.

Thanks mbrook, I ran my AV software and it detected no bugs. I also tried reinstalling OE. It didn't correct the problem.

Also, thank you strbux4me2 and Sabertooth. I tried both suggestions, but with no success. Unfortunately for me, OE still won't load fully.

Any other suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

I had same problem. Thanks Sabertooth - your first "this" (q274017) described exactly what I was doing when OE went south on me. and I was able to follow and fix.
Saved me tons of time and calmed the nerves on fear of lost data not yet backed up elsewhere.
