Since yous stated that the computer resources arent fully used, it imply it could be a software problem, simply try re-installing and see if that helps! It seems like the only possible answer to this
Can i use my Windows XP box as a FTP server so i can upload and download information?
I run Windows XP Pro

Also my pc is set up as a IIS for my asp coding if you needed to kn

Hi fallenint,
You've probably disabled the Messenger service for safety. Did you use a program like 'Shoot the Messenger' ?
Do you want to turn it back ON?
Davey B,
You've [accidentally] created a signature with your post. Click on MyComputing.Net on the left under the list of forums, and correct it in there. Don't forget to set the changes.

i haventused any programs for outlook ive done nothing at all to it exept for put my email details in ect.. i would install it but it came with my computer do you know anywhere were i can download it preferably for free? thanks in advance (again!)

Go into:
C:\Documents and Settings\you\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{A Very Long Number}\Microsoft\Outlook Express
and delete all EXCEPT THE INBOX.

Windows XP MediaCenterEdition = XP Pro?
I'll tell you how to enable the Messenger service first, and if that works, then you won't need to reinstall Outlook Express off of your XP CD.Press WinKey+R (that's the Microsoft Logo-FlagKey+R) to get the RUN-box, and type:
services.msc
Look in the list for 'Messenger' & rightclick on it for properties. Set it to 'automatic'.Also make sure that it's allowed to be used via the Group Policy Editor:
In the RUN-box, type:
gpedit.msc
On the left side, select:
Local Computer Policy
User Configuration
Administrative Templates
Windows Components
Windows Messenger
On the right, look for 'do not allow messenger service to be run'
Set it to 'not configured' if it was enabled.fyi: REINSTALL OE: ControlPanel>Add/Remove Programs>On the left, select Add Windows Components> OE is in that list; uncheck & apply to uninstall, same procedure to install

LL is the one to thank!!
Fallenint, if you want to keep the Messenger service disabled for safety, then you can!! Just reverse the things I posted (the services & the gpedit), and then use LL's link. Look for this on there:
Remove MSN Messenger from Outlook Express and Prevent the Delay
explanation on how to do that registry edit:
Get the RUN-box, and type:
regedit
On the left, browse to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
SOFTWARE
Microsoft
Outlook Express <click on thisThen check the right for an entry called
Hide Messenger
If there isn't, then create one:
rightclick on the right side and add a DWORD entry called Hide Messenger
Then rightclick on that newly created one & modify the value: it should be 2 (hexadecimal).
Just close regedit & log off & back on.OE now flies again. THANX LL !!

The Messenger service is a known security-risk. You can read up on that at this site:
Shoot The Messenger(GRC Gibson Research Center)

ok so the its only a threat if messenger is running in outlook express right? and using lls way it doesnt let it run in outlook express im pretty sure itas not running in mine but not %100 how can you tell? sorry about all the questions im new with this kind of stuff

The messenger service is used by multiple programs, and it'll just open a couple of ports on your computer. Those ports being open is the security-risk. The fact that you are not made aware of this when the service is started by another program, adds to the danger, and the service doesn't end automatically when it's no longer needed, leaving those ports open all the time.

Yep, disable it and apply LL's solution.

Correction: Disable it via gpedit.msc
The ports will be closed if you restart the computer after you have disabled the Messenger service from starting.

so in gpedit.msc i dissable both of the messenger things then restart my computer and it will have closed the ports

or i enable where it says do not allow windows messenger to run and enable where it says do ot automatically start? sorry about all the questions thats it i swear thanks for answering

Yep, and if you want to check what connections your computer is making, then use this program:
TcpView (SysInternals)
It has a function to 'resolve' IP numbers into the DomainNames, so you see which sites are connecting.Try GRC's ShieldsUp! test: it will tell you how well/bad your computer is protected port-wise.
