Hi. All of a sudden when I'm sending anything over 1 Mb in Outlook Express some unusual things happen. Normally the (green) progress bar moves slowly until it gets gets to the end and the email is completely sent. Now, about a half second after I click "send" the progress bar completes from left to right immediately, zip, it's done. But in the lower right hand corner of the program the "sending mail" icon and text continues. Then before the email is sent I get the pop up from Outlook Express that "your smtp has not responded in 60 seconds. Would you like to wait another 60 seconds for the server to respond? (While all the time the "sending mail" icon in the lower righthand corner is still running). I click "wait" and the email will be sent successfully. For a 2 Mb email I have to click "wait" twice. Then it too will be sent successfully. Any fix for this? Or should I just put up with it. I know you can't uninstall and reinstall Outlook Express. That's what I would do if I could.

James.

You simply may need to check Outlook Express and change one setting to solve your problem.

1. Open OE and click on Tools / Accounts.

2. Then click on the Mail tab if it isn't
already open.

3. Click once on the name of your account (to the left of that small screen) to highlight it.

4. Next click on the "Properties" button, which you will find on the right, and a new window will appear.

5. Click on the Advanced Options tab. In the middle of this tab you will see "Server timeout". You will also see a sliding bar with the words "short" on the left and "long" on the right. This value is set to 1 minute by default (you can see that value to the right of sliding bar, next to the word "long").

5. There is a slide on the bar. The slide will be located all the way to the left, so you have to drag it all the way all the way to the right (drag it with your mouse). You should see that the timeout value indicated to the right will now show "5 minutes".

6. Click Apply. If you have more than one account set up in Outlook Express, repeat Steps 3 to 6 for each additional account you have.

Finally, don't forget to click on OK to save the changes, close OExpress and restart your computer to make sure the changes become effective.

Making this change is useful if you send or receive e-mails with big attachments. Instead of getting warnings or pop-ups telling you that "your smtp has not responded in 60 seconds", you will rarely get those pop-ups from now on. This change gives the server more time to process big outgoing and incoming e-mail messages.

Of course, if the e-mail you are trying to send or receive is really huge, 5 minutes might not be enough, but instead of getting that pop-up every 60 seconds, you'll get it after 5 minutes (300 seconds).
Just click on "Wait" as you used to do when the pop-ups appeared every 1 minute.

Good luck.
Juan

Thanks for all the great tips. I just got home from work and tried out your suggestion Juan. I set it for 5 minutes. I just emailed a 2.5 Mb file and it worked just like you said it would. So I learned something today! Thanks for taking the time to give such thorough instructions. It takes only a few seconds to actually perform the tasks, but it takes a lot of words to describe how to do it, and I appreciate it.

Derek, the computer in question is my wife's, and I have Avast 4.5 on it, and have SP2 installed. I have Norton Internet security on mine, and I'm using SP1. I've never had the problem in Outlook Express with mine and the time out is set at 1 minute. So there are quite a few differences between the 2 systems. Anyway, my wife will be happy now, and I learned something I didn't know about Outlook Express.

Glad to hear you sorted it.

Only reason I asked about AVG7 is that some folk had trouble with it on emails and I worked out a fix.

Thx for popping back.
