I want to move my outlook express files over from one machine to another, kind of a backup for work that I "might" do on the first machine. The files have been located with the .dbx extension.
Question: What have I done to have the .dbx file associated with my AutoCAD program?
When I look at the files in windows explorer I see that each of the file types have a AutoCAD database Extension.
What can I do to correct this error so I can properly migrate these files from one system over to another.
Observation:I have read alot about the problems many of us are having trying to do this file migration and I am convinced that a 3rd party file transfer software is probably the way I will safely go.
Can anyone help???

why not just burn the outlook express folder to find it you must have view hidden folders checked in file properties and direct yourself to the folder in document's & Setting's (right click on any folder in outlook and select properties it will tell you the path follow it and burn the root directory) then take that to your new system and import from outlook to outlook point the browse to the cd or paste the folder in the directory and import the data using the wizard (you can then delete the pasted copy for outlook has already rewritten the data .
Has worked for me with other e-mail program's haven't used express for a long time don't know for sure if it will work but beat's messing with data and more software .

There is a built in program in XP that may do what you want to do - File and Settings Transfer Wizard .
Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - File and Settings Transfer Wizard

You don't need a file transfer program...
To move Outlook Express data from one computer to another, here is what you do...Open Windows Explorer, Tools > Folder Options > View...here check the following boxes..."Show Hidden Files and Folders"...UNcheck "Hide Extensions Of Known File Types"...
Next go to Documents and Settings > your profile name > Local Settings > Application Data > Identities > a folder with a lot of numbers and letters that mean absoutly nothing > Microsoft > Outlook Express...
Here you will see all the folders that Outlook Express needs to handle your emial...ther should be 4 files and probably more...Copy all of them to your other computer...
In the new computer, take those files, put them in a folder called Email Data inside your "My Documents" folder...(this is how I do it, you may want to do it differently)...
Open OE on your new machine, and create your email account...now BEFORE you do a send/recieve, in OE, go to Tools > Options > Maintenance > Store Folder > Change...now point it to the folder where you copied your OE data to...This will point your new OE to your old data...
NOW...and only now, do a send/recieve and you new email will be added to your old email...
As for the file associations...do this...
Windows Explorer, go to Tools > Folder Options > File Types > under Registered File Types...scroll down to DBX and see if it lists Outlook Express...If not then New > fill in the extension DBX > OK...now you have to find the Outlook Express executable file...
Hit "Change" > Select Program from List > If OE shows up in the list, choose it then "OK"...if not then choose "Browse" > Program Files > Outlook Express > choose MSIMN.exe > Open > OK etc etc etc...
This will associate Outlook Express files with the DBX file extension...
Hope this helps

Excellent advice from all. I will now sit down and give this a try and will let you all know how it works out.

Steve or anyone else. In regards to the file extension. Here is what I have tried.
Opened Windows Explorer - opening up the string down to where the individual O.E. files are located.Placeing the curser over any of the files and right clicking then looking under the General Tab the "Type of File" is called:Autocad Database Extension. I know that this is wrong and should be something else, along with the correct icon.
The next line below the "Type of File" it opens with is Outlook Express, so that part is ok.Note, that all icons to the left of the file name is associated with my autocad program, I can't figure out why or what I did to make that happen.
Question: How can I change the type of file and it's icon to the correct one. Shouldn't it be an envelope icon? Thanks
Gerry
