I have a weird problem on an HP Pavilion. I want to set Outlook Express 6 to be the default mail client. I go to the Tools>Options, then on the General tab, at the bottom, it says, "This applcation is NOT the default mail handler." There's a button that says "Make Deafult" , so I press it, click apply, then OK. I open up to this page again, and see the line at the bottom says, "this application is NOT your default mail client." I thought I missed the button, but I've tried it 3 times, I tried to restart the computer, but nothing!! Outlook Express can't be made my default mail program.
There is something else. I noticed this problem because I was trying to send resumes out on careerbuilder, and they have a button that says "Apply for this job by e-mail." I press the button, and get a message that says "This action can't be performed because the default mail program is not set." then 68 pages open in the browser, all with an action canceled message on them. I tried going to Tools>Internet Options> Programs (tab) and setting the default e-mail that way, but there are no program in the E-mail drop down box.
Finally, on the start menu where you can see all the programs you've recently opened, there is one that says "e-mail" You right click, and the only thing you can do is open the internet properties screen, i.e.the screen you see when you go to tools>internet options.
I thought this was spyware, but I ran a scan with Spybot in regular mode and in safe mode, removed all the stuff, and still nothing.
Any ideas are greatly appreciated- this one has me at wit's end.

I think you need to set O.E. as your mail default in Internet Explorer..

Tools>Internet Options>programes...make sure O.E. is set as default

Hello,

Ok, try this...
Go into OE and click on "tools."
In "tools" go to "accounts."
Then in "accounts" go to "mail."
In "mail" it should say that whom ever is your internet provider is there. Mine says...mail.comcast.net... then next to it... mail- (default)... then next to that...
connection - (any available).
If it is not, you need to call your internet provider and they can talk you through it.
I had that same problem once before and that solved it.
