Hi there!

I am out of C drive. It shows thatI have only 674MB free space. But I can see very clearly from my control panel's add/remove program that I am using less than 400MB. I have cleaned my internet temp files, my received files, cookies. my desktop is using only 32MB, my documents 9MB, Windows 1.27GB. My C drive has 10GB space. I'm totally insane as I cant figure out where the rest (almost 8GB)spaces are being used.

Please help!

Best wishes with new Year!

Don't rely on Add/Remove to tell you how much space you are using. That only shows spaces applications are using and then only approximate.

Have you taken into account the paging file, the hiberfil.sys file. That could account for another few Mgbs.

How id drive c: formatted, Fat32 or NTFS. If FAT32 you will get more slack space than with NTFS. When windows explore shows you how big a file is, it not necessarily the same as the space allocated to it in the disk. The difference is slack space which is a product of cluster size. 4Kbs with NTFS. 8KBs with FAT32.

Download CrapCleaner and run it and don't forget to empty your recycle bin.

You might also want to check on the space allocated for system restore and see if you have a hidden partition on your compaq.

I agree; computing.net does need an edit button.

With that small of a hard drive, I would just turn off System Restore and backup to a disk. After turning off do disk cleanup then defrag.

Did u empy ur recycle bin? Norton Protected if u run it? Defragment the drive after you delete stuff and then check ur space.

HI Guys!

Thank you so much for your concerns. I tried all of your suggestions and also found this utility freeware http://www.david-taylor.myby.co.uk/software/disk.html#ShowManwhich provided with the information of disk usage and I gained almost 6GB space!!!

Thanks once again to you all!
