My computer shuts itself down. I attempt to reboot and receive "out or range" message. In P O S T, I receive One beep. After many attempts, I could not reboot. I thought this was a memory issue. I have 2 1gb sticks on a Two channel ASUS MB with 4 RAM slots. As an experiment, I moved the sticks over to the vacant slots and rebooted. It worked fine but the same spontaneous shutdown and "out of range" message was repeated. Graphics are also distorted on boot up with the error message. When Win XP "swipes on startup", the colors are smeared.

"Out OF Range", not out or range. Sorry

the out of range is the monitor telling you its not getting a signal or the signal is inappropriate.

If you have builtin to the mainboard video the problem would be with your RAM since the system allocates some of your ram to vidoe processing.

Thank you so much for your ideas. At one point the cooling fan attached to the heatsink had failed. Lord knows how long that little obscure thing had not been spinning. That could have dameged the graphics chip on the adapter card. Perhaps the intermittant nature of this is related to how hot the chip gets. It's a 9100 series and I'm due for an upgrade any way.
