I have been trying frantically to get my computer running again. A week ago I decided to download Norton. It detected the Win32.Polipos virus. I went to symnatecs website and did all that it said to get rid of the virus. As soon as I went through the process my computer started freezing all over the place. Automatically resetting at random times after booting up. So I decided that I needed to just do a clean reinstall of Windows and go from there. I went through the reformatting and first wave of setup on my computer but as soon as it restarts to start the second half of setup it gets to the Windows XP loading screen and freezes or restarts. Since that first began I have stripped it down to nothing but the CD-ROM, the Memory, the Hard drive, mouse, keyboard, the floppy drive and the video card that my monitor hooks into. I ran memtest on all the memory with no errors. I ran a diagnostic of my hard drive with the manufacturers diagnostics tool with no problems. I tried only using one memory chip to no avail. I unplugged my mouse and tried but nothing. I tried connecting my wifes monitor to my computer but that wasnt the problem. I tried VGA mode and no help there. I unhooked the floppy drive same thing happened, the only thing left is the video card or the CD Rom. I dont know how to fix the drivers for my video card without having windows operational, so i dont know how to run a diagnostic check on it. I have a feeling that it is the video card, but it may be the CD ROM as well. Any thoughts or ideas on how to run a diagnostic check on these two items without having windows fully installed? I am at wits end. Any help would be great and very much appreciated.

Interesting developement. I thought maybe i would try to unplug and replug back in the IDE cables (I think thats what they are called...ones that go from motherboard to hard drive) and when i rebooted I am just getting a tone and no boot. That signify a motherboard problem?

You very likely just have a loose connector now on the hdd or mother board.

Need more info.
1) is your XP cd basic Pro or does it have any SP's ?
2) is your hdd ATA or SATA ?
3) size of hdd ? how many partitions ?

You have about covered everything, but before you scrap the mobo, try different ide cables and set the bios to default (not optimal). IF the install goes you can set the board back to optimal.

boot the computer from the cd and and choose command prompt then copy the i386 folder from the cd to the root of the c drive .......then try running the setup from there. other than that try the bios setting regarding apcia which controls the power management. i've had problems with that on some mainboards. one last thing is get a live linux cd and boot from that to see if it will load and run your computer that would help determine a hardware or software or driver issue
