From what I have read the OEMs may have played a part in the problems. It seems to me that MSoft has offloaded much of its prior roll in verifying drivers are available and rollouts are going to work as expected.

I had a problem about a year ago with an update that killed my integrated HD sound. This wasn't a driver update either. MSoft subsequently released a fix. I had already performed a system restore and at that time stopped accepting any updates automatically.

I don't even ask for notification. I let other be the beta testers and download after the updates have been out there for awhile.
