For some reason, whenever my computer starts, the Operating System select screen comes up. The options available are called 1 and Windows XP Home Operating System. Whenever I choose 1, XP boots as normal. Whenever I choose Windows XP Home Operating System, the screen goes black and does nothing. Is there any way that I can get the computer to boot XP on its own without this annoying screen coming up?

You need to delete one of them in

Start->right-click My Computer->Properties->Advanced tab->under Startup and Recovery, click Settings->under System Startup, click Edit. Now, yours should look similar like this.

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect

If you have two lines in the [operating systems] section, you need to delete one of them.

Hope this helps. Bye

right click on my computer icon
choose properties
this take you to system properties
go to advanced tab
go startup and recovery
click settings
change your default os to 1
now click edit and remove the line with
"Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" in it under [operating systems] line
save and click exit ,
don't click X on the right corner
reboot
you might have to find a file call "boot.ini" in the c: drive or whichever directory you intall it on
take out the read-only in the files properties.
It also hidden.

Reboot the Computer and start the OS by selecting 1 and log in..

Open the “My DOCUMENT FOLDER” Click Tool and Folder Option

Go to View TAB
Under Advanced setting
Click on “show hidden files and folder”
Check off “Hide protected system files (recommended)
A message will POP UP..Just Click YES
Click OK to the folder Option

Go to C:\ drive and
Click the FILE NAME “BOOT” (FULL NAME IS BOOT.INI))

OPEN THIS FILE

“BE VERY CAREFULL WHAT YOU DO AFTER THIS ”

YOU WILL SEE SOMETHING LIKE THIS IN YOUR BOOT.INI FILE

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="1 " /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT=" Microsoft Windows 2000 Home 1 " /fastdetect

or Something Like That…depend on your default boot OS

Delete the one say multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT=" Microsoft Windows 2000 Home " /fastdetect

After Deleting you will have Boot.ini file looks like OR Almost look like this ONE..
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP HOME" /fastdetect

And Rename “1” to “Windows XP” or what ever name you want it,

Save this file and Reboot the Computer..It’ll boot normally without selecting anything…The Setting that you made in the starting in the View TAB..Make sure you Make it the way it was before…
