Hi again. I need to install a program on XP that will only install on Windows 98/98SE/ME and 2000. Is there a program that can lie about the OS to a program to get it to install on an "usupported" OS? I read about the "apcompat" program that comes with Windows 2000, but that dosn't come with XP.

I'm trying to install a printer driver for the HP PSC 750. XP's built-in drivers don't print some things very well, and I don't have the time to download the +/- 64MB or so driver from HP's website on my 28.8KBps connection. I thought that since 2000 is similar to XP, it ought to work, but I don't know why they say it dosn't. Thanks again for any help.

A driver isn't quite the same thing as a program - drivers tend to be OS specific.
Bite the bullet and d/l the inflated setup program, maybe use a download manager like NetLeech or Fresh

I disnexjf't (sorry for the typo, I meant didn't) have my dictionary near by. What other name is there to call it except "Install Program", Mr. Wizard?

And also, how can I bite the bullet if I don't have the time to bite the bullet? I bet you don't have a PSC 750. It comes with an Install Program in case you didn't know it.

You are right more than right ray96, TOOOOO many internet cops on here. I also noticed that jboy is a real pain at times. There are a few others that we don't have to mention that also fit into those catagories, as far as I know, computing.net is a place for people who volunteer to help others on a freebie basis. But you always have to be prepared for the odd stick in the mud to jump in with sarcasm. Computing.net is ABOUT helping people in the PC world, not RIDICULING them.

Tried Netleech (already have Fresh) and that download will take 6.5 hours. Don't have time for that. Any other suggestions?

I might suggest that you ask a friend with a high speed connection to d/l the printer driver for you. He or she can always burn it onto a CDRW and let you get up-dated, even CDR's are really inexpensive anymore. Good luck

I had the same problem with my HP officejet a few years ago because I was still on dialup. Wasted a lot of hours dowloading the driver only to find out it was corrupt so HP sent me the disk for free. If you don't have anyone with a highspeed connection and you are desperate just order the CD from HP, it shoudl cost around $10 or so.
God knew I couldn't be a pioneer, that's why he gave me a computer!

well...another suggestion to not having time to wait for a 6.5 hour download is to start the download before you go to bed at night and hope that is finished in the morning...

If you have a program issue then you can try the compability mode. You might have to be sure that that setting is set on both the installer and the ultimate program.
The updated printer app is the best choice if you can get it.

Ok, I got it now. It was to use the compatibility mode in XP. Thanks for your help.
