Hello,
I have a Microsoft Basic Optical Mouse 1.0A which I have been using for the past four years. Now I am facing the foll problem:
1. When i am starting my system (Win XP), the mouse gets activated.
2. It stays activated for about 10 seconds or so and then the power goes off from the mouse.
3. If I remove the mouse from the USB port and then re plug it there, the mouse again gets the power.
4. The power stays for abt 10 or 15 seconds and then the mouse dies yet again. This cycle continues.
5. Sometimes the message comes, "USB device not recognised" and sometimes the message comes "your USB device is installed and is ready for use".
6. Device manager shows Mice and other handheld devices and after a while the entry vanishes.
7. There is one heading in the device manager called 'human interface device' which shows with a yellow exclamation mark. Trying to uninstal and reinstal it allows me to use the mouse for the next 15 seconds before eventually freezing.
8. When i am looking into the Mouse section in Control Panel, it shows as if no mouse i attached and properties show "Cannot start device, error code (10)" and at other times "Code 45".
9. There was a solution provided in the Windows website (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/321122) which deals with deleting registry keys and reinstalling the device. But even that has failed.
10. There is nothing wrong with the mouse as such because when I am plugging the same mouse into another system, it is working perfectly.
11. I have downloaded the latest drivers from the microsoft website.
12. I have tried using a mouse from Lenovo, but even that gives exactly the same problem.
13. I have tried attaching my camera to the USB port and it worked fine. Please help me in installing my mouse properly. My PC is abt 4 years old and it has never had this kind of probem before. Is it possible that the error is not a software issue but a voltage problem? If at all that be so, then how may it be corrected?
Regards.

Are there batteries in that mouse? Do they need to be changed?
Were there any updates or software installed just before the problem started? Does it happen in safe mode?
Go to the device manager, mouse and other pointing devices, double click on the mouse, power management. Make sure that 'allow this device to be shut off to save power' is not checked.

Hello,
The mouse is not battery operated. The model is Microsoft Basic Optical Mouse (USB) 1.0A.
No software changes were made immediately before this happened. In fact this happened over a period of time. Previously there wqould be just temporary lapses in the power supply till a week back when the power supply wud stay only for 10-15 seconds after startup/reinstal of device and then would vanish altogether.
Even in SAFE mode the same problem remains.
In the Device Manager, there is no item called 'Mouse'. When the USB device is plugged in for the first 5-10 seconds the item 'Mouse' would appear, but then it will vanish after that. There is a node called Human Interface Device. Under this node there is an item called "USB Human Interface Device" which shows with an yellow exclamation mark next to it.
Regards.

Then you have to find out why it's disappearing. It's supposed to be there all the time. Disable the HID for a test. See if the mouse reappears.
