I've had exactly the same problem. XP has full of incompatibility issues. It doesn't support many drivers and if you want to use OpenMG forget it! Sony don't have the answer YET!

I'm having the same problem. I looked at the Sony site and did a search. I found some promising links, but, alas, ALL the links were broken, went nowhere, zip, nada.

Do you know for sure that Sony doesn't have an answer? Some of their [as I mentioned, broken] links had Windows XP and OpenMG in the description, and were dated Sept and Oct 2001.

I called the Sony helpline and kicked up a fuss until I spoke to someone important. They finally admitted that OpenMG for XP has not yet been written although it is in the pipeline. As yet, there is not even a date for when it will be ready!

Gentlemen,
I have had the same problem. I think that it is bogus that I cannot use my mp3 player because Sony dropped the ball. Shame on such a big company for marketing the thing as an mp3 player when in fact it is an atrac3 player.

Looks like Sony has version OpenMG 2.2 available in Japan which should be XP compatible:

********************************************
Name: Sony NW-E7/ NW-E10/ NW-MS11
Category: Portable audio player
Price: NW-E7 (64 MB): JPY35,000
NW-E10 (128 MB) JPY40,000
NW-MS11 (high security, 128-MB Magic Gate memory stick)
JPY46,000
Release date in Japan: October 21

The Gist: Not to be outdone, Sony is chiming in with three new
Walkmans (Walkmen?). The NW-E7 and NW-E10 are both slim, cigarette
lighter-style network Walkmans, and are compatible with ATRAC3 and MP3
encoding. The battery will last for around 11 hours on a single charge
(and takes another five to juice back up). The NW-E7 will record 120
minutes of music and the NW-E10 twice that; both are equipped with 128
MB of internal memory, and both have a handy jog lever for one-handed
operation.

The NW-MS11, on the other hand, uses a Memory Stick in place of fixed,
internal flash memory; in this case, a 128-MB version of the highly
secure Magic Gate Stick. All players come with USB cradles and Sony's
(Windows XP-compatible) OpenMG Jukebox Ver2.2 software, so you can
connect them to a PC to download music.

Hey, I have been searching for it, I went to Metreon, sony entertainment place, in my trip to San Francisco, they have all sorts of sony stuff, a crazy place for consumer electronic lovers. They don't have it, and all they did was giving me this adress.

the version 2.2 was released at http://www.support-nwwalkman.com/ yesterday, HOWEVER it is only for use by Sony Europe customers...i spoke w/ Sony yesterday and they believe it is MS fault because OMG was in release before XP - they actually believe the tail can wag the dog and people will blame MS...not likely. Sony US wasn't even aware that Sony Europe had developed 2.2 - how's that for stupidity?

I am not able to download the above v2.2 because it requires the s/n of the player - i suspect it will show a US s/n and then cancel my request.

i have contacts at MS (i used to work there) so i'm checking on where this is at in their pipeline
