Okay, over the past few days I have noticed several people on here asking about problems with a file called openme.exe. The file seems to come attached to an auto-installing dialler program called fastdownload.
The general problems with this are as follows:
A process called openme.exe is started at bootup. This process randomly starts IE pop-ups to X-Rated sites. If you try to shut down Windows with openme stil running, you get a "html package still running" error, and have to end the process manually.I have been having problems with this thing too, and cannot seem to get it off my system. I am running XP Pro with Norton Antivirus 2002 autodetect and Firewall enabled.
My attempts to solve it so far have been:
Rename the openme.exe file (located in Windows directory). Clean all IE history, cookies and temp internet files. Do a complete system scan with NAV and check for Trojans with trojan finders. Scan for and remove all spy/adware using Ad-aware.Doing all this has stopped the porn pop-ups, but I still get a message saying "openme.exe not found" when booting Windows. This means that the process is trying to be launched at some point during startup.
I have checked startup using msconfig, checked likely places in the registry and done a text search for "openme.exe" in every file on my HDD, and can find no reference to it at all.
How can I tell where it is being called during booting. Has anyone had this problem and solved it. It is really bugging me, and judging by previous posts, a lot of other people too.

Did you text search registry? If not try that-
don't forget to buckup your registry first, before changes

Have done a registry text search too and removed any references to this file.
Checked on a few other forums and there seem to be quite a few people complaining about this problem. What's going on?!

Also, if you havent' done so already, you need to BLOCK all EXE, COM, and VBS attachments on email. If you don't you are wide open to future attacks.

I agree with dan...It could of came through the mail or even some kind of warez site...I would be careful on any site you dont trust...Theres many you shouldnt...good luck

Go to www.mlin.net and download Startup Control Panel. This will allow you to disable anything that runs at startup, including those hidden in the Registry.

I had it and, to get rid of it, I followed these steps. 1) start. 2)run. 3) regedit. 4) click on "My Computer". 5) Edit. 6) Find. 7) Type openme.exe. Delete every openme.exe that you find. I had to do this 4 times. Hope this helps.....

liek ken, just clean the line in the system.ini and erase the openme.exe
should work like this...

WinXP does not run services from system.ini. SFA, if you are still getting the openme.exe error at boot, look in the following key: HKEY+LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current Version\Winlogin
the shell key data contains "explorer.exe openme.exe" you need to delete the openme.exe portion of this data. Make sure you leave the explorer.exe alone. This worked for me, I hope it helps you

Anon solve my problem!!!! I have ms windows2k and the solution described by Anon solved the problem!!!
Thanx
WillY
P.S. The registry key is
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current Version\Winlogon

Try this program it has a 30 day demo and worked for me. http://www.simplysup.com/tremover/download.html

I'm using WIn 98 .. I went into sytem.ini and erased the open me.exe line .. also ran the scan S/w from house call
http://housecall.antivirus.com/housecall/start_pcc.asp and they called it troj openme.b virus. This thing has screwed my office windows stuff up too ... maybe it was two viruses .. I'm not to sure .. it was a bad weekend ... don't download exe files from folks you don't know!

click start. click run. type REGEDIT, then hit enter. This will launch the Registry editing tool of any windows version. Hit CTRL-F to bring up your 'FIND' command, then type openme.exe to search your registry for openme.exe. When it finds the information located in the key mentioned above, double click the shell key, then edit the value as described above. Hope this helps.
