I'm trying to play mp3 files sent from a mac to my pc via e-mail. Is there a conversion software that is safe for me to use that will allow this? Windows Media Player on my PC does not recognize the mp3 file.

Assuming for the moment that the files didn't get corrupted on their travels, what you may have is some magical mystery file names. Try renaming to something simple, like:

this.mp3

I agree with Mechanix2Go. The MAC uses some characters in file names that windows considers illegal. The following are illegal in windows filenames: \ / : * ? " < > |

Try opening one in QuickTime.
