opening .mkv files

hey all, i downloaded this file that's supposed to be a video, but it came out as a .mkv file...any ideas on what programs opens mkv files? thanks

Go here - http://ld-anime.faireal.net/guide/matroska-en It explains what mkv is and has the codecs needed to view the file.
