My problem is my computer starts up with bars of
random pixels across the screen, in front of the
normal the screen which can be seen behind.
Also when I try to boot, after the windows xp
loading screen the comp displays a message that
says "out of frequency, power management in
15s". After this it restarts. When I boot in safe
mode there is some error loading vax347b.sys as
it asks if I want to cancel. Whether I cancel or not,
the same thing happens. I have tried reparing and
reinstalling xp to no avail, even disabling
vax347b.sys in the recovery consoling. I really
don't want to format, what should I do?
Nic

What happened prior to all of this? Can you use a system restore to say, yesterday?

My sister was playing the sims 2 when suddenly it
froze. It was like this after she restarted.
The gigabyte backup utility wont work (just
restarts when I try to enter it).

Google search on - out of frequency

Looks as if Safe Mode is the way in to change the monitor settings?

can I also add that when it says "out of frequency"
it also says that the HF and VF are not in the
required range. I can view these in the monitors
OSD but not change them.

I think you're going to have to deal with the Vax347b.sys file before you get to the screen resolution problem. Vax347b.sys (or some program/process calling Vax347b.sys) may be preventing Windows from booting. But to fix the resolution, you need to boot into safe mode.

According to this webpage, Vax347b.sys can belong to either Alcohol 120% or some kind of malware. As Alcohol 120% is one of my most used programs, I find it interesting that a thorough search of my system fails to locate Vax347b.sys. This leads me to think that it's more likely to be part of some malware.

Can you slave this drive to another computer and scan for viruses/spyware/trojans?

Or perhaps you can boot off one of the many available utility CD's with malware scanning tools (Hiren's....etc.)?

As a last resort, you could try a repair install, which would preserve your data, but requires re-downloading of all the Windows Updates.

I have already tried reinstalling and repairing xp but nothing happens afterwards. I will try openning in VGA mode or slaving to another comp thanks

Unfortunately booting in VGA mode had no effect.
I have just tried deleting the vax347b.sys file in
the repair console but it just says "access is
denied"
Booting in safe mode chenges nothing except for
the fact that it displays the files being loaded and
that I see the "out of frequency" error.
I guess I'll have to slave my HD to another comp
and figure it out from there.

I'm so pissed.

I formatted and then setup windows but it still has
the same problem! (without the vax347b.sys error)

I also tried with a different monitor and still the
same problem!

What could be causing this?! I'm guessing it's my
graphics card or my PSU.
