Hi
I am trying to access a website....when I type in the name of the website in the url box, I get the message "this page cannot be displayed" etc. But if I use the websites IP address, it works fine. The website name works on other machines and I can access other websites (by name) no problem.

Thanks for any suggestions as to what this is about!

Go to command line and ping www.thatwebsite.orx. ( you use the one not what I wrote and see if you get the correct ip address.

Check for hosts file entry. Might have a different dns server that has issues. Try both with full path to fqdn. http:... with the www part too.

I read it wrong and answer it wrong too. So get off my case you goober.

After you get the "Cannot be displayed. etc....", what does your URL box read? Does it read, like this:

google.com

instead of

http://www.google.com

If that is the case, there may be a very simple solution/fix... post back.

I would suggest you go to a cmd prompt and typy ipconfig then hit enter.

Note the dns server's ip. Ping it. Does it come back?

Basically you have a name resolution problem Normally the dns server you are pointed to has a list of all ips and names or has a link to a dns server that does.

You are checking the very basic of is the dns server you're pointed to valid and working.

Imagine the power if you knew how to internet search

Hi

When I try to ping the site, I get the message "Ping request could not find host www.site.com. Please check the name and try again."

When I type the site name in the browser, I get this message... "Internet Explorer cannont display the webpage"...in the url box, it reads "http://www.website.com "

In ipconfig, it says..."connection-specific DNS suffix ... : "
IP address.........: ###.###.#.###
subnet mask........: ###.###.###.#
default gateway ...: ###.###.#.#
I'm not sure what to ping for DNS server.

THanks for everyone's help!
