Hello,
I just installed XP yesteday, but for some reason I can not install the driver for my sound. I have onboard VIA AC'97. Under Hardware in the Sounds, Speech, and Audio Devices the Multimedia Audio Controller is not configured correctly (code 1). Everytime I go to reinstall the driver, it gives me a "data is invalid" error. I have the CD that came with the motherboard, and i have reinstalled the sound drivers various times, but still the same problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Try going to Realtek's site (www.realtek.com.tw) and download their AC'97 drivers.

go to device manager, right click my computer-click properties-click the hardware tab-then device manager button, then highlight the entry and click remove ,then reboot. if you have already installed the drivers, windows will use those to setup your sound. reference drivers are available at http://www.viaarena.com/?PageID=328

I tried all the things you two said, and still the same "data is invalid" error. I checked the BIOS and AC'97 is ENABLED, so I haven't got a clue as to what to do to get this to work.
Scott, when i went to windows update, it gives me an error while searching for updates. "Windows update has encountered an error, and cannot load the requested page"
