I have recently switched to Windows XP from Win98SE. Most everything seems to be just fine, although I noticed a few issues with WarcraftII Tides of Darkness the version of that is 1.4 also the most recent version.
Warcraft II Tides of Darkness used to run just fine with Win98SE no problems. Although with WinXP it gives on attempting to run it an error message that basically says it can't find the "VESA" driver which from my computer knowlege is an older display type used by many DOS games. It also detects the normal sound in Warcraft II, but the test for the Midi type well you know the "Music" didn't play anything back. I think something is wrong. I have tried reinstalling warcraft II and looking for some Vesa and Dos sound drivers without much luck at all.I have already checked out Blizzard's website too on this problem and it didn't seem to help that much either. I have surfed the web like crazy trying to come up with some drivers of some sort to fix these problems.
The Display card is an ATI Rage Fury.
The Sound Card is Sound Blaster PCI 128 Model CT4700. I am after something to make WarcraftII run right in XP if it can. Do any of you know of any web addresses that will help me fix these issues or should I just contact ATI and Sound Blaster, or what do you think? Thanks Brady

Have you tried installing the game using Program
Compatibility Wizard ???I find if an older game or program cannot be installed by
way of its CD, then use "Program Compatibility Wizard" to install it.If a game is installed by doing the above, but will not start by
way of the CD, then when inserting the CD hold down the left
Shift key for approx. 15 sec. to keep AutoRun from taking over.
Now click the game in the "All Programs" list. Should start now.
---------------
From a Microsoft web page:If an older application gives you trouble when running
Windows XP, you can set the compatibility properties
manually so that the program runs in a different mode,
such as Windows 95, or in a different display or resolution
setting. To set the compatibility properties for a program:
1. Right-click the executable or the program shortcut to the
executable, and then click Properties.
2. Select the Run this program in compatibility mode check box.
3. From the list, select an operating system that the program
runs in comfortably.
4. If necessary, also change the display settings and/or
resolution, or disable the Windows XP visual themes.
Run the program again when you're finished changing the
settings. Adjust the compatibility settings again if the
program is still not running smoothly: a program that's
unhappy on Windows 2000 may flourish on Windows 98.

How to Troubleshoot Program Compatibility Issues in Windows XPDoubt older DOS based games will work.
May have to buy a newer version of Warcraft that is made for XP.

You'll need to get DOSBox which is a DOS emulator which will let you run games on Windows XP. Warcraft II:Tides of Darkness
was in the their compatibility list.http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/news.php?show_news=1
Also try this link (for VDM Sound emulator):
http://www.dosgames.com/forum/about2565.htmlI got Jazz Jackrabbit from 1995 to run with
DosBox.Mark

I don't know how to install using the compatiblity wizard. So I tried Microsoft's solution and it didn't work at all! If M$'s emulation stuff really worked it would have run this game cause I had it running with Win98SE before.
I tried that DOSBOX program runs that game like I think a snail could boot it faster and I couldn't even do anything in it the mouse was locked that was the real mouse, there was also highly messed up sound. I changed the config file and looked in the help file doing what it suggested without success. I tried it with and without that VDM Sound emulation thing, but I didn't get much sound output.
The display and sound works in other programs like playing Lords of the Realm 2, or other NES games in the Nester work great.
