My friend is building a computer for his grandpa who wanted a "really nice computer" With a lot of his grandpa's he probably went over the top. He got a 3.4 ghz prescott with 1gb of ram, when the old guy is going to use it for e-mail and wordsheets.
Now the reason I'm on the xp forum is because his grandpa's has only used windows 98se and wants only that on his computer. He's been told viruses attack specifically attack xp and is a bad os. Being old I also assume he doesn't like change, and wants to stay with his regular old 98. I was wondering if someone give me a good list of reasons why the upgrade to xp is worth it, and all the disadvantages and flaws with 98, or maybe an internet site stating all this. thanx

I love it :0)
Just let gramps have his Win98. He doesn't want to bother learning something new - it isn't that important to him. It's a darn good operating system, and actually is probably less vulnerable to modern viruses (because it's a DOS environment)than XP. If he is only going to use it for his email and favorite websites, it will work great. Just make sure he has Norton Firewall and Trend Micro PC Cillin AV and he will be happy and fine.
Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day;
Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime;
Then industry pollutes the water and kills all the fish.

well winXP has a beautiful interface but thats ... thats almost all ! lol :)))
may i suggest u install win 2000 .. it looks like 98 but is much .. umm lets say pretty much better .. well if u dont want your grand Pa to call u every night asking for troubleshoot .. go with win2K ..

I agree with snipes. The main problem with 98 was it was always losing clusters.
Please post back within 24 hours or I will delete the post from my follow up list. Thanks.

My mother is on Win98, refuses to switch... don't blame her. Some people just want to use a computer to do some simple work... not to play. Win98 does as good a job as any other. Why should she switch and have to learn it all over again???
Let the old guy have his way!

Ohmigosh, a lot of ageism here.
I'm an old grandpa who loves XP (but not SP2), Photoshop CS, TurboTax, Quicken, IE6 (thinking about Firefox), Eudora, Office, Excel, Aida, Spybot, AdAware, Norton Internset Security 2004, etc. etc., and have all the latest updates (except SP2), etc., etc. I can download, install, repair, restore, and move around the registry with ease.
We old folks can handle it...or at least some of us can. LOL
Having said all that, I agree: let him have 98 if it's only email and Word. But being old doesn't automatically warrant the assumption that we don't like change.
PS - If my grandson doesn't stop fooling around so much, I'll be a great grandpa before you know it.

I don't think the ageism is directed at people but rather the OS.
Win98 and Win2K are "older" systems that are for most people, far superior to XP.
I've used almost every OS since DOS 1.6 and I still like Win98 abut the best for general computing. You can fix ALMOST anything that goes wrong and it's fairly stable in it's later revisions.
I work as a computer conltant and I cringew when I hear fo certain system combos such as Compaq and WinXP.
You just know it's going to be a long, long day.

Alright, I can see your guys point of view. It is his computer. I just thought the latest parts would be great paired with a great operating system. Boy I sure hope I'm not computer illerate when I get to be that old. Even my 40 year old dad was a computer wiz in his time, but now knows nothing, and only uses it for turbo tax.
thanx

fredrib -
I hope you're not computer illerate when you get to be that old either.
LOL. Justkidding. We all mistype from time to time.

"I can't think of one good reason for him to go to WinXP"
How about the fact that Win98 can't handle 1 gig of RAM, even when you tweak with the Vcache settings, you're still going to have issues.

512mb of RAM should do him just fine with win98. But I've never had any problems because of using over 412gb, as long as you tweak the vcache.

Nice eye Kurt,
Beside that I say stick with 98. Sure there won't be any support from MS is a year or two but who cares. Remember the customer is ALWAYS right and it IS his cash after all.
