I mangage a Win2003 Server network with 15 client PC's .. all running WinXP Pro. Each PC is configured to use Offline Files which are kept on the server. Two weeks ago, I changed the name of the server and reconfigured each PC to reflect that change. Everything went fine until this week. Now on each Client PC, an Offline Status icon appears in the tray referring to the old server name. Of course, there is no way to sync to that server so the icon remains and continually reminds the users with the pop-up balloon.

I've tried every way I could think of to remove the references to that old server name. All versions of the offline files have been removed, I edited the registry to remove all reference to the old server name, and I even disabled offline files and re-enabled them. The icon and reminders remain.

There are no references to the old server name in "Synchronize" and there are no longer any references to it in the registry or in temporary offline files.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to keep the icon (and reminder messages) from appearing???

Thanks in advance ..

Mike

Hi,
i find this in MS TechNet:
Portable computer users who frequently work offline might accumulate hundreds of files in the Offline Files folder on their hard disk. Because many of these files might be out-of-date, rarely used, or no longer needed offline, you might want to delete them from the Offline Files folder (the cache) to maximize the available disk space. Users might also want to delete files in the Offline Files folder if a network share has been deleted or is no longer available. In addition to deleting individual files, you can reinitialize the Offline Files cache, which deletes the entire contents of the Offline Files folder and resets the Offline Files database. Reinitializing the Offline Files cache is useful when you transfer a computer to a new user or when a user has been working offline with sensitive or proprietary documents and you want to ensure that they are no longer available offline or that they are not in the cache.

The Offline Files cache is a folder structure located in the %SystemRoot%\CSC folder, which is hidden by default. The CSC folder, and any files and subfolders it contains, should not be modified directly; doing so can result in data loss and a complete breakdown of Offline Files functionality.

If you suspect corruption in the database, then the files should be deleted using the Offline Files viewer. After the files are deleted out of the Offline Files viewer, a synchronization of files may then be forced using Synchronization Manager. If the cache still does not appear to function correctly, an Offline Files reset can be performed using the following procedure:
In Folder Options, on the Offline Files tab, press CTRL+SHIFT, and then click Delete Files. The following message appears:

The Offline Files cache on the local computer will be re-initialized. Any changes that have not been synchronized with computers on the network will be lost. Any files or folders made available offline will no longer be available offline. A computer restart is required.

Do you wish to re-initialize the cache?

Click Yes two times to restart the computer.

Kind regards
Thomas
