Comment:

I'm trying to install Office 97 Pro to Win XP (Sony VAIO notebook) but I keep getting a pop-up after I start install:

SYSTEM ERROR -- Cannot Read from Device
[CANCEL] [ABORT]

I choose either cancel or abort, and get this message:

SETUP INITIALIZATION ERROR
Setup cannot access the required initialization file 'E:\OS\SYSTEM\OLEAUT32.DLL'

This file is on the CD-ROM. What can I do? I've tried to install from DOS, from Control Panel and by using the Compatibility Wizard but all with the same result.

Thanks!

It has always been ny understanding that Office 97 is not compitable with XP. Users have reported errors, strange problems and massive problems trying to uninstall it. I would suggest upgrading to Office 2000 minimum. You might want to run the XP compability test from your CD to see what it might tell you.
