Last year I signed up with MS Beta Test program and was accepted for Windows Live OneCare (WOC). I provided MS with a lot of feedbacks and suggestions that in some way made WOC a good product.

Last February MS posted this official statement on the net...
Promotional price offered to early testers

...for only $19.95 (for 3 PCs) to beta customers who become subscribers between April 1 and April 30, 2006. The price was hard to resist.

This past April 12, I signed up for the promotional price. Not bad I thought and that was the end of it.

Yesterday I received an invitation from WOC Perpetual Beta that stated in one paragraph:

While you may have already purchased Windows Live OneCare subscription service, your participation in beta testing is important to us. Participating in the Perpetual Beta means that you will have the first chance to test out new features before they are released to the public. By including you in the development process, we can make sure that Windows Live OneCare functions properly and meets the needs of customers. We hope you will join our beta and help make Windows Live OneCare the best it can be.

Not bad until I read on the net a news article that stated...

MS makes WOC free - for some.

I already paid for 1 year subscription. My quiz is Should I tell M$ to go to hell or accept the invitation as a sucker. The more I learn about M$ the more I disdain them as a money-hungry corporate.

I don't know very much about that one, but I tried the "Windows Live Safety Center", and every single time I run the scan, it removes registry entries for my McAfee Virus Scan.
McAfee will pop-up reporting that Virus Scan is disabled because critical components are missing. So I have to delete McAfee Virus Scan, then re-install it.
This has happened to me four times already so I stopped using it.

Dealing with MS is like making a deal with the devil. Bill Gates is the anti-christ.
Go get em XP.. LOL

clammer, it is not good to run 2 different AV programs simultaneously as they can conflict with eachother and perhaps leave both AVs ineffective.

best of luck Frank :

Thanks... That's probably why it botched up McAfee. I have since reinstalled McAfee and got rid of the Windows Live Scanner. I tried it only because I was curious and I didn't even know that Microsoft even had a program like that... so I ran it out of curiousity...

XPUser That is good info. I too have signed up as a beta tester for Vista. I do not know the answer to your dilema but I intend to keep my eyes and ears open.

Thanks terii. In all honesty I really don't mind being a beta tester but for a very greedy enterprise like Microsoft it turns me off. If M$ didn't promise you anything for doing beta test for them as a guinea pig well.....

Personnaly I don't think we need MS's help. The average home user should do fine with a standalone Firewall, anti-virus and use a little caution about which web sites they go to.

Do yourself a favor BACKUP!!!
Sorry, I do not check for private messages

The only reason I subscribed is because WOC is more than just AV, Antispyware with a two way configurable FW. OneCare includes Windows Defender running in stealth mode. It also includes things I kept forgetting doing myself - HD defrag (all partitions & HDs), backup files I shoulkd backup regularly, and a few others stuff that I should do in a very routine environment.

Before I put this thread to rest...

WOC systray icons mimics U.S. Department of Homeland's Color-coded threat level system with three colors - Green (all is well), Orange (need my attention to do something such as backup, defrag, etc) and Red (FW turned off, AV signature out of date). For the latter it is in correlation with XP Security Center.

Now to close this... I will just ignore MS invitation. If I were to write back they probably will pass over my letter of decline to some Retaliation Center buried underneath Redmond and you know what they are capable of doing :-)

Hi XpUser. I too participated in one care until I received their first overture of greed. I found all the basic free programs we all run was just as good. A good A/V program, spywareblaster, spybot, etc.get the job done. I believe one care is MS's first step to run everybody else off the map.

Looks like its the very last thing in the mind of the Software Predators. They now have a lot of explanation to do with the angry investors as to why the heck their earning slipped below targets. Tough luck!

Ya, I want my flashdrive, lol. Clammer are you serious, they are only 13 MB's? More B$ from M$. 13 MB's is almost worthless. I wish somehow Linux would take over the desktop and server environments, Ubuntu Linux in particular, I love Ubuntu. If any of you guys are intrested in Linux at all (and you should be), I suggest giving Ubuntu a try.

And XPuser, If I was you I would tell uncle Bill to kiss your a$$. Thats utter B$, but then what can we do about it, after all its M$ and they rule the world with there fingertips.

You do a lot for MS for free. Your posts not only help out users in need but also MS.

Suprised they don't give you the stuff for free. Saying that you do know enough to get that same level of support for free I'd think.

No, I think that's correct.... little 13 MB flash drives... I Think I read that somewhere here on the forum.
Did you see Bill G. in Vietnam? Seems as though they are going to unveil a stripped down version of XP so more people can afford it over there. I don't mean that as a put-down... I think it's a good idea.

Speaking of web-based, WOC is web-based. There is no software to install. This is the beginning of what is to come in the near future - web-based applications etectera. By that time I will be doing farm work with no electricity, no wifi hotspots.

As tonysathre stated, "I suggest giving Ubuntu a try."

I installed Ubuntu (Breezy Badger) on my laptop just before I was admitted to hospital. It was great. During my two week stay, I was amazed at just how easy-to-use this Linux distro was. Of course, what made the difference was the Ubuntu support forums. Unlike most Linux forums, the Ubuntu forums are helpful to complete newbies (like me). I'll soon be setting up a dedicated machine for Ubuntu at home. There is now a distro aimed at schools, "Edubuntu". If educators were to look at Edubuntu, noting the variety of free software available, they'd soon realize that Linux can replace Windows for most (if not all) computing tasks.

For those not quite sure about Linux, there's an interesting project (still very much in it's infancy) that I recently stumbled across. ReactOS is an open-source, XP compatible operating system. I downloaded and ran the live CD and while much of the functionality hasn't yet been implemented, it does work.

Yeah, I'm on the Ubuntu forums a lot also. They are very helpful with everything.

And speaking of web-based, Microsoft Live is going to take over off-the-shelf software. Everything from them will be ran across the wire, which will need to be very secure and fairly light-weight for those with a slower WAN connection. This will also almost completely get rid of pirated software.
