From an operation point of view there is no difference as Eric says.

The retail (Full and Upgrade) version is what you buy off the shelf; this version comes with printed docs and technical support from Microsoft.

The OEM version (Original Equipment Manufacturer) is what a computer supplier supplies with their PC's. Sometimes and OEM version may come with extra specific software bundled ie Compaq Audio Player. Technical support comes from you PC supplier.

Academic Version: You only get the Media and the Licence for the product with no tech support. Aimed at students in education, costing on this is cheap but you have to be a student to qualify.
