OE locks up at random

My boss' computer (an eMachine) at work has developed a new problem. It was working fine until a couple days ago when it froze on him. It now locks up sometimes when he opens Outlook Express. Not every time and not doing the same thing each time (for example, one time it might lock up while downloading new messages, the next time it will lock up when he creates a new message, and the next time it runs just fine). The only way to unlock the system is to pull the plug and restart it. Then it runs fine again for a couple minutes/hours - it's very random. I have no idea what caused this and don't really know what to do with it. I don't want to reinstall the operating system, if I don't have to, so thought I'd see if there were any ideas here first. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Ways to test include viewing event logs. See also if any dump logs exist.

Use performance monitor to remote log on networked system. It may help in looking for clues.

Consider tools like ultimate boot cd. Use memtest and hard drive diags.

See also power supply and temperature issues.

Possible that even ups is going or input power has issues. If one has many power supplies on a circuit it can create harmonics. It can trip breakers and burn connectors. You'd need a professional electrician with special fluke meter to diag that.

Why did it take me over a year to phone in a problem to ATT?

Thanks for the info! I actually removed IE 8 and now everything is working fine, except that he is having to run in IE 7 instead. Trying to get him to switch to Firefox or Chrome, but so far he's diehard IE. Hope IE 7 keeps working for awhile! Thanks again!
