Comment:

I have just switched graphics card from NVidia to ATI. I uninstalled the Nvidia drivers first. Then installed the new card, then finally installed the ATI drivers. Now I get an error message everytime I start windows, that NvCpl.dll can not be found.

I've tried all sorts of ideas, HiJackThis, regedit, detonator RIP, etc. but the damn error always returns after a reboot.

Any ideas

NvCpl.dll should be a "NVIDIA Display Properties Extension" file.

The first thing I'd probably try is rebooting in Safe mode and searching the Registry for "NvCpl.dll". If found in the "Run", "Run Once" and/or "Run Services", etc., I'd delete it.

If you do find and delete it, but it reappears once you've rebooted back into normal mode, it may be a Virus or some type of Spyware|Malware that is masquerading as "NvCpl.dll".

Download and use Regcleaner4.3 to remove this registry entry automatically. Find Regcleaner here: http://www.worldstart.com/weekly-download/archives/reg-cleaner4.3.htm

Well it still comes back after removing the entry in the registry.

However, there is another entry under MSCONFIG/STARTUPREG/NvCplDaemon

Would that need to be deleted as well?

I can't believe its a virus, as it appeared straight after installing the new graphics card.

By the way, regcleaner doesn't appear to work on my PC. I start the program, it thinks for a while, then nothing. It appears as a running process, but there's no interface.

Regards

NVCPL.EXE is a process which is registered as the W32.SpyBot.S Worm. It takes advantage of the Windows LSASS vulnerability, which creates a buffer overflow and instigates your computer to shut down. Here is a Microsoft bulletin: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms04-011.mspx. It is a virus. Regcleaner does not seem to detect this file, i am having a lot of difficulty removing it as well. When I remove from the startup list with the system configurator it still seems to startup with the computer. I am goint to try some anti-virus software.
