Hey guys.

Ok this is my problem. I recently found out how to use the CONVERT function in dos to turn my main drive into NTSC because even though I knew that NTSC is better I was just too lazy to find a way to convert my system from FAT32 to NTSC so I was always running NTSC.

Anyway, I recently found out that I could easily go from FAT32 to NTSC so I did and everything was working fine until I needed to format my computer. I have 2 drives, drive C - main drive and drive D, my backup drive on which i save stuff whenever i do a format.

I formated drive C and began to install Windows Me (My windows XP cannot be launched in dos mode so i have to set something up like win Me and then i put xp over it).

Windows Me refused to install since it is an older version of winows and can only be installed on a FAT32 drive (i mean it can't be installed on a NTSC drive). I got stuck and didn't know what to do at first and then decided to try to erace the whole drive C partition with fdisk and set it back up without touching drive D. I did that and set up everyting as i hoped because the new drive C partition was now FAT32 but all my stuff from drive D is gone(my dad finds this so hillarious that I didn't know that fdisk would delete all the drives info).

My question is how would i format my disk then? windows allows drive conversions from Fat32 to NTSC but not backwards so i can't have a FAT32 drive again before I format. If i use fdisk like I did before my drive D files will be wiped as well and i don't want that. The only other option that i can see (haven't tried or even looked into this yet) is to use a 3rd party program before I format to convert NTSC into FAT32. But somewhere I read that doing this isn't always safe and could ruin files or something.

Anyone know any other sugestions?
Thanks a lot.

If you used fdisk then you will need to format the new partiton. When you format it gives you the option. You can use the ME or XP install program to do similar to fdisk as well as format. Fat is not real bad. I just doesn't allow as much file and folder protection as fat. There are ways around that too if one has access to the computer. The main thing is to always use a limited account. Use an admin account only installing programs.

I wonder why you can't boot into the XP and then just put in the ME CD when it asks for what you wish to upgrade from?

"My windows XP cannot be launched in dos mode so i have to set something up like win Me and then i put xp over it)". You shouldn't need to install WinME before WinXP. Enter the BIOS and set the boot order to Floppy, CD, HDD0. Then just boot to the WinXP CD and follow the prompts. This is the preferable method rather than upgrading from WinME. As jefro has indicated, if your WinXP is an upgrade version, all that is needed is proof of ownership of a qualifying product. Just insert the ME disk when prompted.

You also did NOT lose all your stuff on d: unless you removed ALL partitions. Your d: drive is ntfs right? you can't read it because of what you are using to boot. ME can't read ntfs either.

This is where you laziness really bit you in the butt. If you had just done some searchs or even looked here to the left here you would have learned about what OS's can read fat32/ntfs and the particulars of booting msdos based OS's and Ntldr based OS's.

Best of luck!

Ya i did mean ntsc, i kinda had to deal with both NTFS and NTSC in the past little while so i kinda mixed them up.

Ok, i never tried to set up the winxp from the start, by changeing the order in bios to check the cd but i used a winme startup disk and through the command prompt tried to launch Setup.exe on the Windows Xp cd. From there it does not launch because it sais that the program doesn't launch in dos mode. I can try to do it by changing the bios load order but i doubt it would work.

I'll have to play around with it a little while after i get home from shcool today.

Thanks everyone.
