Well, well, well. I have just had and solved the problem of the bad or missing ntoskrnl.exe file where XP won't start at all.
I made a boot disk from another XP machine and booted the offending machine with that, (in order to access the non-bootable CD that came with my system).
When it started up I tried to access the CD drive from the command prompt but nothing I typed was echoed on the screen. I checked the keyboard cable and it had worked loose, plugging it back I thought I would try to reboot the machine again, just in case and it worked.

All was perfectly happy, so in conclusion, before you try buggering about with copying files or system restore, try making sure your cables are secure. You never know.

Oh, and thanks Microshaft for that useful feedback from XP.
