Hey! I'm having a problem. Basically, my computer is in a infinite boot. It turns out that there is something wrong with the "ntoskrnl.exe" file (missing or corrupt).

I ran a search and people with similar problems said to basically copy the file from the XP CD to the windows/system32 folder. For some reason, my access to my CD-ROM is denied, so I cant copy (but I can view...strange).

I can access my external HD via ms-dos in recovery mode. I was thinking: If I copy the missing file from the XP CD onto my external HD, can I copy it from my external HD to the windows/system32 folder?

Initially, I hoped to use "xcopy" to copy all of my files from a folder on the drive on my laptop to a folder in my external HD. Will this work? If someone can get back to me, that would be great.

Thanks!

A missing or corrupt file can also be caused by a bad sector on the harddrive. Possible to fix that by doing
chkdsk /r

I ran "chkdsk /p/r" because I saw it on some other website that solved someone else's problem. It did not work for me.

I cant seem to get "xcopy" to work either. Says it is an unknown command? I have XP SP2. Please note that I can't even run XP.

I also ran "expand" on the file "ntoskrnl.ex_" the recovery disk to my system32 folder and that did not work either.

Thanks in advanced.

Boot to the Reinstall/Recovery CD and run a Repair of the OS.

I booted from disk and pressed "r" to enter recovery mode. Once in DOS, I entered in "chkdsk /p/r" . It took HOURS to finish, but when it did, I rebooted and the same problem still exists (infinite boot).

Any ideas?

What else would you mean by running recovery on the OS? Will this erase all my files on the OS?

On another note: I bought an HD Enclosure (Which basically makes the HD an external HD, IDE to USB 2.0). I plugged it into another computer with vista.

When I enter "my computer" to move the files from the HD to the computer, it says "my computer" is "not responding" and the following shows up:

Problem Event Name: AppHangB1
Application Name: Explorer.exe

Is Vista a problem? Will it work on XP or 2000 instead?

Any more ideas?

< I entered in "chkdsk /p/r" >

I wonder about that command.
In the Command Prompt, I type
help chkdsk
It then list all the available 'switches'.
There is no /p shown.
