I used to have XP pro on my laptop(hp compaq nc6400)few days ago and dont know what happened it suddenly started coming up with "NTLDR missing" on startup and would not go any further. my main aim is to recover my family photos which hold a great deal of value to me and few other items. I dont have hp recovery CD or any CD suppose to be with this laptop. i have bought 'miniPE v2k5 09.03' CD but dont know how to use it or what to do with it. Could somebody please help me out ? many thanks waseem

To recover your data I would suggest removing the hard drive and connecting it to another computer's USB port with a USB to IDE/SATA adapter cable. They aren't very expensive. The following is an example for an IDE drive:

You might have to take ownership of the drive on the other PC.

Hello and welcome to Computing.net.

Do you have an XP CD at all? It doesn't matter if it came with the laptop or not. If you do, just put it in the drive and reboot and run a repair install on it. You will need the XP Product Key of your laptop though. It's usually on a sticker underneath the laptop.

If you don't have an XP CD, you can use the miniPE disc to copy the NTLDR, and NTDETECT.COM files to your hard drive. These files aren't on the miniPE CD though, I would have to e-mail them to you. This method doesn't work all the time though.

EDIT: If you're just wanting to get your files off, just follow the steps in reply #1.

I suggest you use a live version of Linux if the above suggestion to fix the NTLDR doesn't work.

Knoppix is one live version that can recover files from a NTFS formatted disk that has a corrupted file system. You would need a place to COPY (don't use cut) the files you need to recover. You can copy to an external drive, flach drive, network drive, etc.

Removing the drive may also work but if you are unfamiliar with disassembling a Laptop I wouldn't recommend it. Also, if it is still under warranty it may void the warranty.

Theres not much point in using Knoppix when the windows recovery console will suffice from a windows CD. Knoppix is merely a liveCD that will allow him to view the file structure assuming its not corrupted. He would be better off with an ERD disk or BartPE disk (sysinternals wininternals) that would allow him to view the HDD`s contents from a windows pre installation enviroment.

I agree with you. That is why I stated "if the above suggestion to fix the NTLDR doesn't work". I should have used a plural on the word suggestion.

Thank you guys for your suggestions, the laptop has been working fine for last 6 months without any problem, i bought it in a private sale and now a friend told me a reason for NTLDR could be that Win XP installed on laptop is not Genuine. could this be true ??i have tried other few methods too but no luck. i also tried to re-install XP and the setup goes as far as "setup is trying to install files" and then an error appears stating "use manufacturer's diagnostics and recovery CD". i dont have any of those CDs. i downloaded "HP Backup and Recovery Manager for Microsoft Windows XP" (sp37632) from HP site but dont know how to make a boot/bootable CD with the above software so that its picked up as i use it in laptop OR how can i use this software with miniPE (i dont know how to use miniPE) Thanks Aleem

Note: XP pro, cpu:1.8GHz, HD: 160Gb, Ram:1G
was in NTFS

Wether the installation is pirated or not that will not affect Windows from booting. Windows isnt booting because it cannot find the NT boot loader. There can be a number of reasons for this. In your case i would recommened a rebuild unless your capable of following the kb article from MS listed here:

Reread response #3. Download Knoppix and burn to a CDR disk. Then boot the laptop to the Knoppix CD and read the help files to learn how to maneuver in Knoppix. You should be able to copy your photo files to an external or flash drive or even a different computer if you are connected to a network.

If you want to forget the pictures as you mentioned in #9, boot up the laptop and start pressing F10 repeatedly. A recovery process should start, restoring the computer with the OS and software that was installed when the PC was bought. This will only work provided that you did not delete the hidden recovery partition on the laptop.

If you did somehow delete the hidden recovery partition, then yes, a laptop of the same exact model would help as you can use the program described here or most likely here to make a new set of recovery discs from the hidden recovery partition on that computer. Either that, or you can just order the recovery discs by following the directions on the first page.
