second time, new system, first loaded xp from gateway, had probs, then loaded pro from dell, got ntldr missing, finally bought new xp home ed...got ntldr missing again, all the drives (c,d,e,f)have diff names in dos, eg c=d e=f..etc....copied ntldr in dos, wouldn't let me copy ntdetect.com says file not found, all screwed up. should i just reformat (3rd time) and reload windows, don't want this happening again, funny thing, there is an 8mb partition there says windows needs these files to install won't let me delete it could that be the problem, that partition started the first time i turned on the systed with gateway's xp cd

Your question is totally garbled. You need to explain what your setup is, what you've done, and how it went wrong.

Installing XP on a PC is straightforward, unless the machine has bad hardware, is not compatible with XP or has been mangled before starting the install. Its not obvious which of these categories applies here until you supply clear information.

Boot from CD, or from floppy disk and delete all partitions and create a new partition. if you continue to have problems, contact microsoft.

Yes, i agree with Steve, you haven't made it easy for us. Something else came to mind. Have you ever had windows working on this computer? Because if you have put in a hard drive thats too big (BIOS limitations), the installation will fail. Then you need a hard disk manager.

OK good. Sorry if we sound rude, but somehow we need more detail. So, boot the computer from the CD or dos disks or disk manager program such as partition magic and delete all of the partitions, and create one new big one. Reinstall windows from scratch. I know windows XP disk will allow you to delete all partitions, and create a new one. if you continue to experience problems, because you have a new copy of XP form microsoft, you are entitled to product support. So contact them.

a new sys...gigabyte mobo had trouble loading mobo drivers to the hd..but got it to work, (3 wks ago)..then loaded gateway cd ( i know shouldn't have)...had probs, then tried a dell xp Pro..(again stupid of me) got the first ntldr is missing, formatted the HD, and installed a new bought windows xp 2 days ago. last nite the systed locked--rebooted and got ntldr is missing. Went to R (cd in) wanted admin password (didn't have) hit enter and my C: is now D....(loaded d:\windows) i have 4 partitions c,d,e,f seems all the drives are different d=e e=f...etc...i can format and re install, but afraid of this again. I restored an image of C (made yesterday after the clean install) [true image] and still get the "ntldr missing"...When i first started there was a partition (ready to load windows) 8mb said windows needed the for files...i was told that partition shouldn't be there.....sorry for the confusion

been there...doesn't work, i appreciate all the help, let me ask, when you install windows for some reason there is always "unpartitioned space of 8 mb" is this normal? and....when one first puts in the xp cd, files begin loading to a brand new unformatted unpartitioned hard drive is this normal?

Unpartitioned space- Yes, that is normal. You normally don't see it unless you are using something like Partition Magic.
XP should load to the partition you select. It will always load the boot.ini, ntldr, etc. files to C: drive regardless of where you put the XP installation.

yes there is always either 7 or 8 mb that wont be deleted even if you delete partition and then make a new one, the same 7 or 8 mb will be there, I beleive they are files needed to install the os. p.s. had this problem with my new board and hdd turned out to be my nec dvd-+r rom(hardware issue)

contacted microsoft, they are sending me a new xp cd....i have an oem one, and it doesn't have a recovery console (press R nothing happens there) i'm starting to think that maybe Norton Internet Security might be causing this?...i have 4 partitions, and i formatted C...and installed the new xp cd on thurs (oem one) and still had the probs i mentioned, gonna see what microsoft sends. Should i continue to format C and install there, or format all the partitions and start over?

I had this problem too and this is what I did (Microsoft was wasn't of much help)

1. Boot from the WinXP CD and select REPAIR when prompted. This takes you to the RECOVERY CONSOLE.
2. Once recovery starts (i.e after entering ADMIN Password) copy the file NTLDR from the CD (i.e d:\i386)onto the root system drive (i.e C:\)

To be sure you can also copy the NTLDR file to the following folders (c:\windows, c:\windows\system32). Also verify the existence of these files (ntdetect.com, boot.ini).

Exit Recovery Console
