Is this a laptop? Did you make the restore disks when you first got the computer?

When the computer first boots do you see any hardware configuration screens? You need to verify the hard drive is OK before proceeding further.

What version came on the laptop? Vista is an upgrade from WinXP. Also, finding drivers for older versions of Windows than came on the laptop can be problematic.
