When I startup my computer, it straight away comes up with a black screen saying NTLDR is missing. Press CTL+Alt+Del to restart. Each time I do this, the same screen comes up. I have tried researching this problem online, and have already unplugged and plugged in again the IDE cable to the hard drive. I have also run chkdsk /r on the Windows Recovery Console, as well as FIXBOOT and FIXMBR, but all to no avail. Anyone have any suggestions. Thanks

did you follow this?
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318728

another reason for this is you didn't defrag your drive regularly and the boot files get moved past the 1024 boundry.

Usual solution is to put the drive as a slave in another xp system and defrag it.

Imagine the power of knowing how to internet search

This topic arises on a weekly (at least) basis. The search feature would yield lots of potential solutions, yet nobody seems to use it. Maybe Justin should make the search feature fill half the page when starting a new topic ("SEARCH" in large letters the width of the page). But then, there would still be people too lazy to use it.

Please let us know if you found someone's advice to be helpful.

Go here to find a cd image that will let you get into windows and then just copy and paste the ntldr located in the burned cd to your C:\drive

Thanks for the responses so far. I have done quite a few more things based on suggestions all around, and have now solved that problem. However, a new one has now occurred, saying the HAL.DLL file is missing. I have searched this problem and it seems to be a corrupt BOOT.INI file. The main solution I found is to change the attributes on the Recovery Console (Attrib -H -R -S C:\Boot.ini), then delete the file (Del C:\Boot.ini) and finally use the command of BootCfg /Rebuild. When I try this I encounter a number of problems. When changing the attributes, I get the message 'The paramater is not valid' or 'The system cannot find the file or directory specified'. I used the DIR C: command to show me the list of files in the C: directory, but only 5 files came up (bootex.log, found.000, ntdetect.com, ntldr, System Volume Information). The same response of 'No matching files were found' comes up to the command to Del C:\Boot.ini. Finally, when I try BootCfg /Rebuild, I get the following response: 'Failed to successfully scan disks for Windows installations. This error may be caused by a corrupt file system, which would prevent BootCfg from successfully scanning. Use Chkdsk to detect any errors'. I ran a Chkdsk command as well as a Chkdsk /r command, and everything seems fine.
Any solutions to these problem?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
