Ok. One day I decided to fomat my HDD and follow it with a clean install. So about 3 seconds into the formating processes, I quickly decided to put some things on a disk. So I ejected the c.d and when I restarted, I got the error messsage "NTLDR is missing." I think it only formated the very beginning of the hard drive. So now I can't access my C: drive. Is there anything I can do to fix this problem....Anything?!?!

Hey, how it going?

You can try this but I doubt it will work.
How to do a system repair.--Boot from the xp cd and go past the recovery console to the install menu. Select repair the existing installation. You won't lose any data except the xp updates. Unless you have a slipstream sp1 Or SP2 cd you will have to d/l sp1 or sp2 and all subsequent updates. You MUST have at least SP1 installed and the updates for security reasons. Be sure the firewall and A/V is active before going online as you will be susceptible to sasser and msblaster.

Howdy:
1)Insert the Windows XP bootable CD into the computer.
2)When prompted to press any key to boot from the CD, press any key.
3)Once in the Windows XP setup menu press the "R" key to repair Windows.
Log into your Windows installation by pressing the "1" key and pressing enter.
You will then be prompted for your administrator password, enter that password.
Copy the below two files to the root directory of the primary hard disk. from the CD-ROM drive (D,E Or whatever your CDRom Letter is)
copy D:\i386\ntldr c:\
copy D:\i386\ntdetect.com c:\

Once both of these files have been successfully copied, remove the CD from the computer and reboot.
Hope it will work for ya
Cheers..

I think it's hosed.

You can avoid many of these Windows problems with Linux. Linspire eases the transition for new users

You cannot do this - you must wait for formatting to finish.

What you can do is let the setup process (formatting included) finish.

What were you thinking?

Hopefully you have not done anything yet.

You can STILL GET YOUR FILES BACK.

THE LAST THING YOU WANT TO DO IS A INSTALL OR REPAIR OF THE OS.

The reason is because format does not delete your data. It just wipes out the file allocation tables which is how all the data is located/tracked.

SOLUTION is to buy one of the many disk recovery softwares available via the web. Look for one that specifically addresses formatting like you did. I have seen them recover after the format completed so you are in way better shape than that.

If you do anything with the OS, thereby populating the file allocation tables with new info, recovery is much more difficult if not impossible.

No way, 3 second formatting can destory many data! you'd better use data recovery software to recover file if you have important file. If you have no, re-format it and install windows.

I'm sorry to hear of your loss, starting that formatting process will likely ruin your data.

That same error sometimes happens if your boot files get corrupted (not in this formatting incident mentioned here) and you can correct it (for free) by visiting my website:
http://ntldrismissing.com

Downloading the fixntldr.exe file and running it to create a bootable floppy (or CD-ROM if you don't have a floppy). If it fixes your problem, please donate :)
