I've upgraded Windows 98 to Windows XP home w/ SP2. Everything works fine until I shutdown my computer(restarts work fine). If I shutdown, i'll get the "NTLDR is missing" error when I turn it back on.

As a side note, I've noticed since I installed Xp, when I shutdown, my hard drive(OS) spins back up and I can hear a click or two when it usually shuts down quietly.

Solutions I've tried : Most of these fixes DO work and allow windows to load, until I shutdown again.

- Delete/Copy/Change attrib. ntldr/ntdetect
- I've tried FixBoot & FixMbr
- I've inspected/edited/rebuilt boot.ini
- I've tried a repair install
- I've tried a full install
- I've tried formatting/repartitioning
- I've re-installed Win98 and Re-upgraded.
- I've tried "sys C:" with a boot disk.
- I used FDisk to inspect my partitions.
- I checked loose IDE cables.
- I changed IDE cables.
- I detached my other hard drives (os only)
- My bios detects/looks fine.
- Im booting from my hard drive, not cdrom
- No floppy is in my drive.

I seem to be running out of options here, other than buying a new hard drive. I've tried most of those multiple times. Luckily I don't have any data to loose on this drive.

Any help is appreciated!

Hi Robbie,

The link you gave includes the notation that XP will not boot if the MFT on a NTFS partition is highly fragmented. This is something I never thought about before. Thanks for the handy info :-)

Thanks.

@XpUser - I believe i've tried eveything on that page. They do work, but again it fails when I fully shutdown my computer.

@RobbieDickon - I tried running that and it tells me my drive is not formatted as NTSF of FAT (though everything else states FAT32).

I miss read reading this ... They do work, but again it fails when I fully shutdown my computer.

It's an indicative of hardware problems - maybe HD?

"Is your XP CD genuine?" - yes

At this point a hardware problem is my only guess.

XP user glad I found something you didn't already know about (hehe).

My best opinion on this one would be the hard drive is not formatting correctly.

It may be due to a bad hardrive but you should download the software to test your hardrive before you run out and buy one.

Fdisk does not always format correctly.

Is it possible for you to not upgrade? Why are you installing win 98, then XP?

Can't you do a clean install and let xp format and partition the drive and see what happens.

I have seen that error many times with upgrades and also on HP machines.

Anyways let us know what happens.

Good Luck

Robbie,

I really don't know everything - who does anyway :-)

If Rodder454 has the original Windows 98 CD, he/she can get a full installation using the XP Upgrade CD. If you are interested, I will give you the procedures. It's M$ reward for your long-time loyalty.

I've done the a clean install using the upgrade CD (letting xp format/partition). That didnt work so I also tried formatting/partitioning on my own. This wiped my OS, which is all I have as "qualifying media" (no orig. 98 CD, only the cab files I burned on a CDR and a old restore disk). So to install XP again, I had get 98 back. But again, I have done a clean install with the same result.

I have also tested my hard drive w/ software from western digital, and it seems to have no problems.

Also this a custom built machine, not hp.

Just an update -

I tried low level formatting, and after zeroing the drive, and doing a clean install the problem seems to be fixed.
