Popi
If you look at the Properties of your Drive(s) it will tell you the File System
If your XP was Pre-installed then it's probably NTFS but check anyway
Lesley

Popi : NTFS is not a version, it is a file system like FAT32 is one as well. When you install WinXP you have the choice between FAT32 or NTFS. NTFS means NT File System. And like Lesley said right click on your HD icon and select properties, it will tell you there what file system you have.

There are 3 different versions of NTFS.
Win2k was version 5
XP is version 5.1
NT4 was either version 3 or 4, I can't remember offhand.

ectoplasme, you need to do some reading. There are 3 different versions of the NTFS file system.
For those of you who don't believe this, try using Partition Magic version 7 on XP's NTFS partition and see what happens. It will hose it up big time. That is why Power Quest released Partition Mgic version 8 for XP systems. You can also check out Power Quest's site. It will give you the info on the three different types.

Here is a little info copied directly from Micorsoft's site. For some reason they don't mention the NTFS for XP but this should prove that there is a difference in the partition structure.
Because NTFS data structures are not the same for Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 2000, Windows NT 4.0 disk tools such as Chkdsk and Autochk do not work on NTFS volumes formatted or upgraded by Windows 2000. These tools check the version stamp of NTFS. After installing Windows 2000, users must run the updated version of these disk tools on their NTFS volumes.
Here's the URL to that page - http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/techinfo/reskit/en-us/default.asp?url=/windows2000/techinfo/reskit/en-us/prork/prdf_fls_mbyy.asp

Tom : that is not what I was saying, I know there are different versions of winNT with their NTFS file system but I thought ( and still believe) you were mixing carrots and apples i.e: file systems and OS's..but nevermind since this discussion is not gonna go anywhere.

Perhaps it's me that's confused but I thought the original question was "Are there different NTFS versions"
Anyway, hope I didn't ruffle anyone's feathers, sorry for the confusion.

All that Popi needs to know is - as wanderer said - that with regard to the XP NTFS - there is nothing to Update!
XP's NTFS Version - whatever Version it is - is XP's NTFS Version
