i have an xp machine which is currently installed on fat32 drive. already with lots of applications too, infact just in use machine. but i want to convert the hard drive from fat32 to ntfs, is it possible? if yes how can i do that without any damage to the existing installations?
I have never personally done it but have read posts where things have gone terribly wrong when doing the change, just wanted to caution you that things can happen where all data can be lost, back up what you cannot afford to lose

If you're PC is for work rather then Gaming I would recommend keeping Fat32 as it is easier to recover Data

There have been many debates on this subject but the fact is that XP is perfectly stable under FAT32 and a great many users have absolutely no need of the security features nor compressed folders so thus far I'm afraid your arguments for NTFS are far from convincing.

thanks every one! but the fact and matter is this security of a thing! I need it so badly (file permission, encryption, sharing and stuffs) due to the environment that i operate on. at the same time dont wanna risk the systems status-quo. in the event of failure can i still recover my data?
Summary: You can't convert to NTFS in 98. It would just wipe out the OS. Did you go into bios and let it auto detect the old hard drive? Also XP has a file and settings transfer wizard @ Start/programs/accesso...
Summary: I would suggest you first fdisk your drive and delete all partitions. Then all XP CD's are bootable. During setup it will ask for an authorized previous windows CD to verify you own one, then it shoul...
Summary: this may sound too simple, but I checked help in XP home and it said you can do it from the command prompt using the "convert" command. check it out:) ...
