NTFS Boot sector

Here's my problem: I have windows xp that will only boot with a xp boot disk (that I made with the ntdetect, boot.ini...). This is only because the BIOS was told to search for an operating system from the A: drive first. If I take out the boot disk and the BIOS looks for a operating system on the c: drive (which is my windows xp drive), all I get is a blinking cursor at the top left of the screen. I have tried using the fixmbr in the repair console, and I even tried using some 3rd party programs. Me thinks the MBR was errased totally and that's why windows xp wont boot after the BIOS has done all it's post checks.
I used to have Boot Magic on the hard drive and I know that it puts itself in the mbr, so what I did *accedentally* was use the 'fdisk /mbr' command from a DOS 6.22 disk. I think that this made things worse. Any suggestions would be very appreciated.
Once again: if I do use the boot disk, Windows XP comes up just fine with all my settings saved from the previous session.

Go into the BIOS and make the CDRom drive the first boot drive. Put your XP CD in there and when you come on the option, repair the installation. Then choose repair the boot sector. You've trashed the XP boot system files.
