I would suspect its NTLDR is missing.

Boot the xp cd via the bios and go into recovery console. Run the utility fixboot. This will restore the boot files like ntldr.

Defrag your drive. This can be a sign of a severely fragmented drive. Make sure your AV is uptodate as well as your spyware checkers.

wanderer,

That would be my guess, too.

Could be weak sectors, in which case the drive maker's utils would be good to run.

I had a problem with my NTLoaDeR recently (NTLDR) and after trying to rebuild my bootsectors unsuccessfully, I reformatted my HD and reinstalled XP Pro. Microsoft had no answers for me, but I eventually reset my BIOS settings (out of sheer frustration from trying everything else) and this solved the problem. I didnt have to reformat, but all is ok now. Hope this has been helpful for you and that you dont have to go through the same stuff I did.

Cyclone,

What did you change in BIOS?

I have a boot disk with about 50 utilities on it that can correct and diagnose problems for everything that might go wrong. There was a generic BIOS reset program on there that I used. There might be a reset option in your bios. Try that.

Good Luck

Cyclone,

Thanks.

Don't need it now. Just another tidbit to file away.
